An Alternative Model in the 1940's

Description

This photograph captures an Alternative Model in Newcastle, taken on the 22nd of January 1949. The collection is undeniably ahead of its time, the photographs are of an unusually dark and suggestive nature. Nothing is known of their purpose or the model in the photographs; they are simply referred to as ?Mr Steinberg?s Model.? The collection raises strong questions of an unknown Newcastle. Their dark and seductive content is suggestive of an underground and alternative scene with tones of theatrics and burlesque. This is a collection of photographs found in the Turners Collection at Tyne & Wear Archives. Turners Photography Ltd was a commercial photographic company based at 7-15 Pink Lane, Newcastle. Image reference: DT/TUR/2/2384/N This photograph is part of a larger collection that can be viewed here www.flickr.com/photos/twm_news/sets/72157633468920125/ (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons. Dear old Neddy - he never let her down!

Description

Model poses for a Turners publicity shot, October 1958 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/4/AG1083/1). To read a blog about Turners advertising techniques see www.twmuseums.org.uk/engage/blog/turners-saved-my-marriage/. Tyne and Wear Archives presents a set of images taken by the Newcastle-based firm Turners (Photography) Ltd. They were taken by the firm on is own account for possible use in their advertising campaigns. Turners frequently hired models to help promote their work and to encourage sales in their shops. Some of the shots are humorous or bizarre while others are quite suggestive. The images are fascinating for what they tell us about the times that produced them ? the fashions, the attitudes, the technology ? Most of the images are quirky and almost seem to invite comments. If you?d like to suggest alternative captions we?d be delighted to hear them! (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons.
