Description

This course is a survey of analytic tools, approaches, and techniques which are useful in the design and operation of logistics systems and integrated supply chains. The material is taught from a managerial perspective, with an emphasis on where and how specific tools can be used to improve the overall performance and reduce the total cost of a supply chain. There is a strong emphasis on the development and use of fundamental models to illustrate the underlying concepts involved in both intra- and inter-company logistics operations. The following topics are covered: demand forecasting tools, inventory control algorithms, transportation operations and management, vehicle routing, scheduling, fleet dispatching algorithms and approaches, optimization of transportation carrier operations, supp This course is a survey of analytic tools, approaches, and techniques which are useful in the design and operation of logistics systems and integrated supply chains. 1.206J Airline Schedule Planning (MIT) 1.206J Airline Schedule Planning (MIT)

Description

Explores a variety of models and optimization techniques for the solution of airline schedule planning and operations problems. Schedule design, fleet assignment, aircraft maintenance routing, crew scheduling, passenger mix, and other topics are covered. Recent models and algorithms addressing issues of model integration, robustness, and operations recovery are introduced. Modeling and solution techniques designed specifically for large-scale problems, and state-of-the-art applications of these techniques to airline problems are detailed. Neptune Yard

Description

This photograph shows a storehouse at the shipbuilder Wigham Richardson's Neptune Yard. In 1881 the owner John Wigham Richardson made a large sundial, which can be seen here hanging on the storehouse wall. He also wrote a motto underneath: 'Watching these fleeting hours soon past, remember that which comes at last.' The storehouse was taken down when Wigham Richarson merged with Swan Hunter in 1902, but the sundial was preserved, and today it is in Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums' collections. Presenting the Freedom of the City to Earl Jellicoe

Description

Presentation of the Freedom of the City of Newcastle upon Tyne to Earl Jellicoe, Admiral of the Fleet, 9 November 1925 (TWAM ref. DF.GRA/1/4). These images belong to a series of albums documenting John Grantham?s service to the City of Newcastle upon Tyne as its Sheriff 1924-1925 and its Lord Mayor 1936-1937. John Grantham was born in Blyth in 1877 and became a cinema proprietor in Newcastle. He was elected to the City Council in 1912 and became an alderman in 1932. The albums give us an interesting insight into the duties of Lord Mayor and Sheriff as well as a fascinating picture of the times. 2016 is the 800th anniversary of the creation of Newcastle's Mayoralty and Burgesses. Visit of the Channel Fleet to Sunderland, 1895

Description

Laying a memorial stone on the South Pier, Sunderland to commemorate the visit of the Channel Fleet, 12 September 1895 (TWAM ref. 3768/8). This set of images celebrates the 300th Anniversary of the establishment of the Port of Sunderland. The port authority was constituted in 1717 by Act of Parliament, which appointed the River Wear Commissioners to manage and improve the harbour and river. Since then the port has changed beyond recognition with the construction of piers, docks and quays and the dredging of the River Wear to make it wider and deeper. These developments were vital to the coal trade on which the region?s prosperity depended. The improvement of the river was also essential to the success of shipbuilding in Sunderland as well as allied industries such as marine engineering and ship repairing. These images are a reflection of Sunderland?s proud industrial history. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share these digital images within the spirit of The Commons. Description

John Readhead and Sons, South Shields 6th May 1963. This shot shows the graving docks and slipways. The company celebrated its centenary in 1965 and was still employing around 1,000 people. New orders for a fleet of cargo express liners for the Cunard Steam Ship Company meant a healthy future ahead. Running anti-clockwise the ships shown are No.1 Dock, Shell Supplies; No.2 Dock, Wandsworth; No.3 Dock Ambesta; No. 4 Dock, British Oak; East Quay, British General and Sunriver. HMS Shark at sea

Description

Starboard bow view of HMS Shark at sea, c1913 (TWAM ref. DS.SWH/4/PH/4/903/3). She was an Acasta-class destroyer, launched at Wallsend by Swan Hunter & Wigham Richardson on 30 July 1912. HMS Shark served with the Grand Fleet during the First World War but sadly was sunk during the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916. Only 6 out of the ship's company of 92 survived. You can find out more about the men who served on HMS Shark at livesofthefirstworldwar.org/community/2666. The Rivers Tyne and Wear were responsible for building many vessels, which served Britain during the First World War. This set remembers some of those warships that took part in the Battle of Jutland from 31 May to 1 June 1916. During the battle over 6,000 British sailors lost their lives and 14 Royal Naval vessels were sunk. The losses included the battlecruisers HMS Queen Mary and HMS Invincible, as well as the destroyers HMS Shark, HMS Sparrowhawk and HMS Turbulent, all built on Tyneside. Their memory lives on. ESD.260J Logistics Systems (MIT)

The following topics are covered: demand forecasting tools, inventory control algorithms, transportation operations and management, vehicle routing, scheduling, fleet dispatching algorithms and approaches, optimization of transportation carrier operations, supp
