Mary Anne Blaids, arrested for sleeping out

Description

Name: Mary Anne Blaids Arrested for: not given Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 17 June 1905 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-37-Mary Anne Blaids The Shields Daily Gazette for 19 June 1905 reports: "At North Shields Mary Ann Blades (19), Newcastle, was charged with sleeping out on a doorstep in Linskill Street early on Saturday. Defendant said that she was drunk and that was the reason she was sleeping out. Chief Constable Huish said that the defendant made her 22nd appearance. She was committed for 14 days". The Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette for 24 August 1904 reports: "A Young woman named Mary Ann Blades was charged with stealing clothing. Carl Anderson, a seaman on board the Gothenburg steamer Lindholmen, now lying in the Hudson Dock, said the clothing belonged to his shipmates and himself, and was worth 6s 6d. The clothes were missed from the vessel at three o'clock this morning. The Lindholmen lay alongside the Quay. PC Freeman of the River Wear Watch deposed that shortly before midnight yesterday he met the prisoner on the Dock carrying the bundle. She told several stories and then admitted stealing the things. The Bench committed the accused, who had a bad character, to gaol for three months with hard labour". These images are a selection from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 in the collection of Tyne & Wear Archives (TWA ref DX1388/1). Maud M. Garmey, domestic servant, arrested for theft

Description

Name: Maud M. Garmey Arrested for: not given Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 8 November 1905 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-37-Maud M Garmey The Shields Daily News for 8 November 1905 reports: "ALLEGED THEFT BY A GIRL Maud M. Garney (17), belonging to Jarrow, was remanded for eight days on a charge of having stolen a large number of domestic articles, the property of Augustis Maccellari, from the Tyne Hotel, Clive Street, where she had been employed a week". The Shields Daily News for 15 November 1905 reports: "THEFT BY A DOMESTIC AT NORTH SHIELDS At North Shields Police Court today, Maud M. Garney (17), residing in Jarrow, was charged on remand, with having stolen, on the 7th inst. from the Tyne Hotel, Clive Street, three bedsheets, a pillow case, and several other household articles, valued at 1 4s 2d, the property of Augustaf Maccelari. The wife of the prosecutor stated that the accused was in the service of her husband as a domestic servant. On the 7th inst. she missed several household articles, which she valued at 1 4s 2d, and gave information to the police. The articles produced were the property of her husband. Jane Elizabeth Robson, a single woman, residing on the Ranter's Bank, stated that on the 7th inst. the accused came to her house and asked to be taken in. She acceded to her request. Prisoner had with her a lot of things which witness afterwards handed over to the police. Inspector Thornton said he arrested prisoner and charged her with the theft. She replied: "Yes, I took them". Chief Constable Huish stated that he had had an interview with the relatives of the accused, who resided in Jarrow. They thought she should be sent to a home and with the assistance of the Police Court Missionary (Mr Macpherson), a home had been found for her. He asked the magistrates to deal with her under the First Offenders' Act and bind her over to come up for judgement if called upon within twelve months on her promising to go into the home. Accused gave her consent and the magistrates bound her over." These images are a selection from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 in the collection of Tyne & Wear Archives (TWA ref DX1388/1). This set contains mugshots of boys and girls under the age of 21. This reflects the fact that until 1970 that was the legal age of majority in the UK. Bedtime story

Description

Enjoying a bedtime story at the Royal Victoria School for the Blind, Newcastle upon Tyne, 1982 (TWAM ref. E.NC18/24). Tyne & Wear Archives is proud to present a series of images relating to the Royal Victoria School for the Blind, Newcastle upon Tyne. The set has been produced to celebrate UK Disability History Month 2014. The Royal Victoria School for the Blind (then known as the Royal Victoria Asylum) was established from a fund to mark the coronation of Queen Victoria in 1837 and was originally located at the Spital before moving to premises in Northumberland Street. In the 1890s the name was changed to the Royal Victoria School, and in 1895 the school moved to the former house of Dr Hodgkinson in Benwell Dene. Pupils came from throughout the North of England. As a result of legislation to integrate special groups within the mainstream education system the school closed in 1985. Lillian Tibbs, arrested for stealing a dress

Description

Name: Lillian Tibbs Arrested for: not given Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 12 September 1914 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-250-Lillian Tibbs The Shields Daily News for 14 September 1914 reports: ?PETTY LARCENY. BLYTH WOMAN IN TROUBLE AT NORTH SHIELDS. Today at North Shields, Lillian Tibbs (21), Blyth, was charged with stealing a blue voile dress, value 1, the property of Mrs A.G. Colledge, 19 Rippon Terrace, between the 1st and 2nd inst. The prosecutrix stated that eight weeks ago the prisoner engaged a combined room at her house, representing herself as a married woman. Witness afterwards found that she was not married and had given the wrong name and she ordered her to leave. On the day after she had gone witness missed the dress. Det. Mason said he received the accused into custody at Blyth where she had been apprehended on the information of the Shields police. She was wearing the dress when arrested. Accused admitted taking the dress but said she thought there was no harm in doing so; she had given Mrs Colledge half a dozen aprons and an overcoat. Mrs Colledge said that the accused supposed husband got the overcoat but the aprons were still there. Accused?s mother said that her daughter had been in a situation at Monkseaton and she (the mother) was not aware of the kind of life she had been leaving. She would promise to look after the girl if the magistrates would be lenient with her. She had given no trouble previously. It was stated that the accused had said she had gone to live with the man in question out of spite against his wife. The man had now gone away to the Front. Accused promised to amend her life and was bound over in the sum of 5 to be of good behaviour for six months". These images are taken from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 (TWAM ref. DX1388/1). This set is our selection of the best mugshots taken during the First World War. They have been chosen because of the sharpness and general quality of the images. The album doesn?t record the details of each prisoner?s crimes, just their names and dates of arrest. In order to discover the stories behind the mugshots, staff from Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums visited North Shields Local Studies Library where they carefully searched through microfilm copies of the ?Shields Daily News? looking for newspaper reports of the court cases. The newspaper reports have been transcribed and added below each mugshot. Combining these two separate records gives us a fascinating insight into life on the Home Front during the First World War. These images document the lives of people of different ages and backgrounds, both civilians and soldiers. Our purpose here is not to judge them but simply to reflect the realities of their time.
