Furnishings and Domestic Culture in early Modern England

Description

A seminar presentation on doctoral research, employing probate inventories for the Oxfordshire market town of Thame in the 17th century. A presentation of doctoral research to the Archaeology and Local History seminar series at Kellogg College in November 2011, outlining theoretical and methodological approaches to the interpretation of probate inventories and other contemporary evidence in order to describe the experience of essentially non-elite daily life in the early modern period, and the changes in domestic culture which indicate wider shifts in modes of consumption and social relationships. The research also aimed to develop a better understanding of the operation of domestic culture; an interrelationship of material, social and conceptual elements. Lobby of the Paramount Theatre, Newcastle

Description

View of the lobby at the Paramount Theatre, Pilgrim Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, September 1931 (TWAM ref. DX1677/1/1). The Odeon Cinema opened on Pilgrim Street, Newcastle upon Tyne on 7 September 1931. It as originally known as the Paramount Theatre but was taken over by Odeon in 1939. The Odeon?s luxurious décor made it one of the country?s finest cinemas and arguably the North East?s best loved. Most of the images in this album date from its opening and convey a real sense of the building?s elegance and beauty. Sadly the cinema closed in 2002 and was demolished in 2017. This image is from an album which was kindly donated to the Archives by the Northumberland & Newcastle Society. Interior of the Shipley Art Gallery

Description

The Shipley Art Gallery was bequeathed to the people of Gateshead following the death of Joseph Shipley, a local solicitor, in 1909. The architect?s plans for the Gallery were submitted to Gateshead for approval in October 1914. With hindsight, it is hard for us to imagine that towns were planning major projects like this during the First World War. However in autumn 1914, the British people were convinced it would be ?all over by Christmas?. Despite this belief coming to nothing, Gateshead continued to build the Gallery, even travelling down to the House of Lords to appeal against a ban on providing new materials except to the War Effort. The building opened in 1917 and is a testament to local pride and craftsmanship. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons. Passionate Edwardians

Description

A rather racy postcard from the early twentieth century (TWAM ref. 5625). The postcard is addressed to Mr G. Sowerby, 24 Simpson St, Felling-on-Tyne and postmarked 11 October 1912. The message on the back is transcribed below. ?Dear George, Many thanks for letter, you will think I am a very long time in writing to you. How is George I sent him a card about a fortnight since & he has never answered it. You wouldn?t do that I am sure. Write soon and let me know how all the bhoys are getting on Annie xxxxxxxxxxx How does this card suit It?s rather nice isn?t it. Bow wow? This set celebrates the many postcards in our collections. The people, places and events they show can give us an insight into the past, documenting the landscape, the fashions, the way we lived. Some postcards are unused but others tell us something about the people who bought them, through the messages they wrote. They can give us a fascinating glimpse into people?s lives.
