Using clickers to meet the feedback demands of techno savvy students at Glasgow Caledonian University

Description

This case study looks at the positive impact that the use of TurningPoint clickers has had on staff and students at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) since their reintroduction a couple of years ago. It will discuss the barriers that had to be overcome in order to facilitate this change and highlight the action plan that was implemented in order for it to succeed. It offers some great examples of the clicker use from flipped teaching, to exam revision, to delivering explicit subject material and to a live simulation lecture that subsequently led to a real life resuscitation across from the University in Buchanan Street Bus Station.

Using TurnitinUK / GradeMark to enhance academic feedback for learning and to increase marking efficiency at Glasgow Caledonian University

Description

The main focus of the case study was consistency of marking assessments and turnaround of feedback. The case study demonstrates how the grading and plagiarism software GradeMark, by TurnitinUK, enhanced the student experience of academic feedback for learning through orientation of the grading criteria. This provided consistency, and through the process of learning, students could even mark their own papers with clear understanding.

Automated ICT Skills Self Evaluation System at Glasgow Caledonian University

Description

Towards the end of Academic period 2011/12 an enquiry was made by the ICT Skills Tutor about migrating an existing self-evaluation system (that students could use to gauge their skills and to direct them towards relevant training materials) and the ‘possibly’ of automating the process of getting the report to them. A system was already in place using the University intranet but it required substantial human intervention to process the data and it had always been cumbersome getting access the data for later analysis.

Code Word: EDGCUMBE This album celebrates the achievements of the Hawthorn Leslie locomotive works at Forth Banks, Newcastle upon Tyne. The works were established by Robert Hawthorn in January 1817 and in 1820 his brother, William Hawthorn joined him as a partner. The firm initially manufactured stationary engines but within a few years diversified into marine engineering and in 1831 produced its first locomotive engine for the Stockton and Darlington Railway. In 1870 the firm established a separate marine engine works on the River Tyne at St. Peter?s and from 1882 the Forth Banks Works became devoted entirely to the manufacture of locomotives. In 1885 the firm amalgamated with the shipyard of Andrew Leslie at Hebburn, creating the world-famous shipbuilding and engineering company R and W. Hawthorn, Leslie & Co. Ltd. The Forth Banks Works of Hawthorn Leslie produced engines of all types and sizes for railways around the world. The output of the Forth Banks Works included a large number of tank engines for industrial works and collieries and the firm established a speciality in the construction of crane locomotives. The images in this set date from the early twentieth century and are a reminder of Newcastle upon Tyne?s proud industrial heritage. They are taken from a series of photograph albums produced by Hawthorn Leslie. The albums were kindly donated to Tyne & Wear Archives by Alan C. Baker and T.D. Allen Civil.
