12.090 The Environment of the Earth's Surface (MIT) 12.090 The Environment of the Earth's Surface (MIT)

Description

A great variety of processes affect the surface of the Earth. Topics to be covered are production and movement of surficial materials; soils and soil erosion; precipitation; streams and lakes; groundwater flow; glaciers and their deposits. The course combines aspects of geology, climatology, hydrology, and soil science to present a coherent introduction to the surface of the Earth, with emphasis on both fundamental concepts and practical applications, as a basis for understanding and intelligent management of the Earth's physical and chemical environment. Strategic view of performance Strategic view of performance

Description

Strategic management and planning are no longer the preserve of senior executives. This free course, Strategic view of performance, looks at three different approaches to strategy before analysing the direction that strategic management may take now that it has become an accumulation of small tactical decisions rather than a top-down process. If you are interested in how a business 'ticks', this course could provide some of the answers. First published on Fri, 08 Jul 2011 as Strategic view of performance. 12.753 Geodynamics Seminar (MIT) 12.753 Geodynamics Seminar (MIT)

Description

In this year's Geodynamics Seminar, we will explore the depth and breadth of scientific research related to Earth's present and past ice-sheets, glaciers and sea-ice, as well as extraterrestrial planetary ice. Invited speakers have been chosen from experts in the current frontiers in ice-related research, including planetary ice, climate records from polar and tropical ice cores, the Snowball Earth, subglacial volcanoes, ice rheology, ice sheet modeling, ice microkinetics, glacial erosion and tectonics, subglacial life and polar remote sensing. A field trip to Iceland in Summer 2006 will allow us to view some of the island's ice caps and glacial geology, the exposed mid Atlantic Ridge and evidence of ice-volcano interactions. Shipyard workforce at Lake Baikal

Description

The icebreaking steamer 'Baikal' was built at Walker in 1896. This photograph shows the workforce who reassembled the 'Baikal' at Lake Baikal. They were mainly exiles and criminals. They also included Isaac O'Henry, the Chief Engineer, who often told a tale of a long walk in the tundra alone with a guide who later turned out to have murdered his entire family with an axe. DeSTRESS Film 9: Decision Analysis: Uncertainty and Climate Change

Description

DeSTRESS films combine live-action explanation and interviews, filmed in a variety of locations, with narrated animations that take the viewer through a worked example. Lasting 25'36", this film uses the question of a policy response to climate change as an example of decision making using a regret matrix. It also illustrates Present Value calculations.
