Automated ICT Skills Self Evaluation System at Glasgow Caledonian University

Description

Towards the end of Academic period 2011/12 an enquiry was made by the ICT Skills Tutor about migrating an existing self-evaluation system (that students could use to gauge their skills and to direct them towards relevant training materials) and the ‘possibly’ of automating the process of getting the report to them. A system was already in place using the University intranet but it required substantial human intervention to process the data and it had always been cumbersome getting access the data for later analysis.

We will grapple with this question as we investigate how our understanding of new technologies and media is socially shaped and, in turn, how new media might influence our social behavior. We will begin by studying how similar panics about "old" media (books, film, television and even the written word itself) set historical precedents for these current fears.
