This course will conduct a comparative study of the grand strategies of the great powers (Britain, France, Germany and Russia) competing for mastery of Europe from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. Grand strategy is the collection of political and military means and ends with which a state attempts to achieve security. We will examine strategic developments in the years preceding World Wars I and II, and how those developments played themselves out in these wars. The following questions will guide the inquiry: What is grand strategy and what are its critical aspects? What recurring factors have exerted the greatest influence on the strategies of the states selected for study? How may the quality of a grand strategy be judged? In 2004, the Ansari X PRIZE for suborbital spaceflight captured the public's imagination and revolutionized an industry, leveraging a $10M prize purse into over $100M in innovation. Building from that success, the X PRIZE Foundation is now developing new prizes to focus innovation around "Grand Challenge" themes, including genomics, energy, healthcare, and education. This course will examine the intersection of incentives and innovation, drawing on economic models, historic examples, and recent experience of the X PRIZE Foundation to help develop a future prize in Energy Storage Technologies. Includes audio/video content: AV selected lectures. Manders Menagerie

Description

These two caravans were part of the Manders Menagerie travelling show. Here we can see a beautifully decorated caravan labelled G.Manders, alongside which stands a 'Birds Beasts and Reptiles' van. Accession: 944-2952 The images have been selected from the Arthur J Fenwick collection of circus material. Arthur James Fenwick (1878-1957) was a director of Fenwick's Department Store. In his personal life he was extremely interested in fairs and circuses, collecting historical material about them and building personal relationships with showmen who visited Newcastle. Grand Entrance - Mauretania

Description

There were 9 decks in the Mauretania and this was the Grand Entrance on the boat deck. Also on this deck was the first-class library, the first-class lounge and music room, the first-class smoking room and the verandah caf. The Mauretania was built by the shipbuilders Swan Hunter and Wigham Richardson Ltd, at the Wallsend shipyard and was one of the most famous ships ever built on Tyneside. Grand Slam bombs awaiting delivery

Description

?Grand Slam? Bombs awaiting delivery, 7 January 1945 (TWAM ref. 1027/5178). ?Workshop of the World? is a phrase often used to describe Britain?s manufacturing dominance during the Nineteenth Century. It?s also a very apt description for the Elswick Works and Scotswood Works of Vickers Armstrong and its predecessor companies. These great factories, situated in Newcastle along the banks of the River Tyne, employed hundreds of thousands of men and women and built a huge variety of products for customers around the globe. The Elswick Works was established by William George Armstrong (later Lord Armstrong) in 1847 to manufacture hydraulic cranes. From these relatively humble beginnings the company diversified into many fields including shipbuilding, armaments and locomotives. By 1953 the Elswick Works covered 70 acres and extended over a mile along the River Tyne. This set of images, mostly taken from our Vickers Armstrong collection, includes fascinating views of the factories at Elswick and Scotswood, the products they produced and the people that worked there.
