Eilert Tiller, Norwegian sailor, arrested for breaking and entering

Description

Name: Eilert Tiller Arrested for: not given Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 5 December 1907 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-119-Eliert Tiller For an image of his accomplice Patrick Liljebald see www.flickr.com/photos/twm_news/25657821142/in/album-72157.... The Shields Daily News for 13 December 1907 reports: ?SEAFARING MEN SENT TO PRISON. Patrick Liljebald (35), described as a ship?s steward, of Gothenburg, and Eilert Tiller (20), a Norwegian sailor, were brought up on remand charged with breaking and entering on the 5th December a shop situate on the Union Quay, and stealing therefrom a quantity of cigarettes, tobacco etc, of the value of 1 4s 2d, the property of Messrs E.H. Smith and Co. The Chief Constable (Mr J.H. Huish) withdrew this charge and preferred one of simple larceny. Evidence was given to the effect that PC Armstrong, while on duty on the Union Quay, noticed that a window of the shop mentioned had been broken, and he in consequence kept observation upon the premises. Blowing his whistle and waving his lamp about he attracted the attention of a night watchman ? Lawrence Bonholm ? who came to his assistance. Leaving the latter outside, the officer entered the premises and found the two prisoners who tried to conceal themselves. He took them into custody and had them conveyed to the police station. On being charged with breaking and entering the premises, Liljebald said he had only gone there to get a sleep, while the other prisoner made no reply. They were both sent to prison for one month with hard labour.? These images are a selection from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 in the collection of Tyne & Wear Archives (TWA ref DX1388/1). Charles Pearson, arrested for stealing from offices

Description

Name: Charles Pearson Arrested for: not given Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 15 November 1907 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-117-Charles Pearson An image of his accomplice Stephen Fitzgibbon is available www.flickr.com/photos/twm_news/24620365114/in/album-72157.... An image of his brother, Thomas Pearson, is also available www.flickr.com/photos/twm_news/25158947272/in/album-72157.... The Shields Daily News for 16 November 1907 reports: ?THEFTS FROM OFFICE ON THE NORTH SHIELDS FISH QUAY. At the North Shields Police Court this morning - before Lieut.-Colonel F.R.N. Haswell, Coun. G. Addison and Mr G.H. Stansfield - Stephen Fitzgibbon (17) of 15 Bird Street; Thomas Pearson (16) and Charles Pearson (19), also of Bird Street, were brought up in custody charged with various thefts. Fitzgibbon and Thomas Pearson were charged with larceny from back yards, being called upon to answer three cases, while Fitzgibbon and Charles Pearson were charged with three thefts from offices on the North Shields Fish Quay. Evidence having been given in support of all the cases, the defendants were formally charged. They admitted the thefts and had no excuse to offer. Chief Constable Huish told the magistrates that other charges could have been preferred against the accused. Altogether there had been eleven offices broken into on the quay. They were each committed to prison for 14 days in each case, which means Fitzgibbon will receive three months? hard labour and the two Pearsons 6 weeks each. Chief Constable Huish mentioned that the elder Pearson was in the habit of carrying about with him loaded firearms. A six-chambered revolver had been recovered from his house.? These images are a selection from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 in the collection of Tyne & Wear Archives (TWA ref DX1388/1). This set contains mugshots of boys and girls under the age of 21. This reflects the fact that until 1970 that was the legal age of majority in the UK. Manolis Cammins

Description

Name: Manolis Cammins Arrested for: not given Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 9 May 1905 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-71-Manolis Cammins The Shields Daily News for 9 May 1905 reports: ?THEFT FROM A SEAMAN?S BOARDING HOUSE AT NORTH SHIELDS. At North Shields Police Court today Manolis Cammis, a Greek seaman, was charged with having stolen from a boarding house at Swan?s Quay, on the 8th inst., a pair of trousers and a vest, valued at 1 15s, the property of George George, a Greek seaman. The prosecutor said that on the date named he left the house in order to look for a ship, and on returning for breakfast he missed a pair of trousers and a vest, which he had left in his room. He accompanied the boarding house keeper (Mr Nichols) to South Shields and upon going to the Shipping Office they saw the prisoner, who was wearing both the vest and the trousers, the latter being concealed by another pair. He accused him of the theft and he replied that he bought them at Baltimore. Mr Nichols corroborated this statement. Inspector Thornton said he arrested the accused, who was still wearing the clothing, and charged him with the theft. He said he bought the clothes at Baltimore. In the pockets he found two studs and two keys which the prosecutor identified as his property. Formally charged the prisoner pleaded not guilty and said he bought the clothing from an Italian on board of a ship yesterday morning for 7s. There was another charge against him of having stolen 3s 11d from the same boarding house, the moneys of John Pappivannon, an engineer?s steward. The evidence shewed that the accused and the prosecutor occupied the same room and the money was taken while the latter was asleep. Prisoner denied this charge also. The magistrates committed the accused to prison for one month with hard labour on the first charge and dismissed the second?. At North Shields Police Court today, John Legg (19), Skipsey's Quay; Robert Richardson (17) and John Richardson (14), Union Stairs, Liddell Street, were charged with having stolen a quantity of iron from the Shields Engineering Company's Works, Bell Street, on the 27th inst. PC Dixon said that at 9.50 last night he was on duty in Liddell Street, near the Engineering Works, when he heard a noise on the shore. On going there he found a bag containing iron on the bottom of some steps and the three prisoners a few yards away. He asked them what they were doing there and they said they were looking for wood. While they were talking Legg went away and witness followed, but was unable to find him, and the iron had also disappeared. He afterwards saw the three prisoners in Richardson's home and arrested them. He charged them with the theft and they replied that the iron was there when they went on the shore. An assistant manager of the Shields Engineering Coy. valued the iron produced at 2s. The two eldest prisoners pleaded guilty, but John Richardson denied the charge. Legg, who had previously been imprisoned for larceny, was sent to gaol for a month with hard labour. Robert Richardson was committed for seven days in the second division and John Richardson was discharged."
