Tram for Dunston crossing the High Level Bridge

Description

Postcard showing a tram passing along the High Level Bridge between Gateshead and Newcastle upon Tyne, early 20th Century (TWAM ref. DF.ATK/16/6). The postcard is unused. This set celebrates the many postcards in our collections. The people, places and events they show can give us an insight into the past, documenting the landscape, the fashions, the way we lived. Some postcards are unused but others tell us something about the people who bought them, through the messages they wrote. They can give us a fascinating glimpse into people?s lives. HMS Victoria on the River Tyne

Description

HMS Victoria, passing through the Swing Bridge, Newcastle upon Tyne, 1889 (TWAM ref. D.VA/24/3). She was launched at the Elswick Shipyard of Armstrong Whitworth on 9 April 1887. ?Workshop of the World? is a phrase often used to describe Britain?s manufacturing dominance during the Nineteenth Century. It?s also a very apt description for the Elswick Works and Scotswood Works of Vickers Armstrong and its predecessor companies. These great factories, situated in Newcastle along the banks of the River Tyne, employed hundreds of thousands of men and women and built a huge variety of products for customers around the globe. The Elswick Works was established by William George Armstrong (later Lord Armstrong) in 1847 to manufacture hydraulic cranes. From these relatively humble beginnings the company diversified into many fields including shipbuilding, armaments and locomotives. By 1953 the Elswick Works covered 70 acres and extended over a mile along the River Tyne. This set of images, mostly taken from our Vickers Armstrong collection, includes fascinating views of the factories at Elswick and Scotswood, the products they produced and the people that worked there. By preserving these archives we can ensure that their legacy lives on. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons. Bessie Surtees House, Newcastle, 1958

Description

View of Bessie Surtees House, Sandhill, Newcastle upon Tyne, April 1958 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/4/976/4). Tyne & Wear Archives presents a series of images taken by the Newcastle-based photographers Turners Ltd. The firm had an excellent reputation and was regularly commissioned by local businesses to take photographs of their products and their premises. Turners also sometimes took aerial and street views on their own account and many of those images have survived, giving us a fascinating glimpse of life in the North East of England in the second half of the Twentieth Century. Bridges across the River Tyne, 1978

Description

Aerial view of bridges across the River Tyne between Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead, April 1978 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/4/CN11077D). Tyne & Wear Archives presents a series of colour aerial photographs of Newcastle upon Tyne. These images were captured by the Newcastle-based photographic firm Turners Ltd during the mid to late 1970s. At first glance, some of these images give the impression that the Newcastle landscape hasn't changed much in 40 years. Look more closely, though, and some of the differences between then and now will reveal themselves - see how many you can spot. Aerial view of the River Tyne, 1983

Description

Aerial view of the River Tyne, from Newcastle and Gateshead to the coast , August 1983 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/4/CN14357F).
