Mary Anne Blaids, arrested for sleeping out

Description

Name: Mary Anne Blaids Arrested for: not given Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 17 June 1905 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-37-Mary Anne Blaids The Shields Daily Gazette for 19 June 1905 reports: "At North Shields Mary Ann Blades (19), Newcastle, was charged with sleeping out on a doorstep in Linskill Street early on Saturday. Defendant said that she was drunk and that was the reason she was sleeping out. Chief Constable Huish said that the defendant made her 22nd appearance. She was committed for 14 days". The Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette for 24 August 1904 reports: "A Young woman named Mary Ann Blades was charged with stealing clothing. Carl Anderson, a seaman on board the Gothenburg steamer Lindholmen, now lying in the Hudson Dock, said the clothing belonged to his shipmates and himself, and was worth 6s 6d. The clothes were missed from the vessel at three o'clock this morning. The Lindholmen lay alongside the Quay. PC Freeman of the River Wear Watch deposed that shortly before midnight yesterday he met the prisoner on the Dock carrying the bundle. She told several stories and then admitted stealing the things. The Bench committed the accused, who had a bad character, to gaol for three months with hard labour". These images are a selection from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 in the collection of Tyne & Wear Archives (TWA ref DX1388/1). Launch party of HMS Champion

Description

Launch party of HMS Champion, launched by Lady Cynthia Asquith at the Hebburn shipyard of Hawthorn Leslie, 29 May 1915 (TWAM ref. 4923/2). Have you noticed a few uninvited guests in the background. sneaking into the photo? HMS Champion was a C-class light cruiser and one of the first vessels of the Light Cruiser Squadron in action at the Battle of Jutland. The Rivers Tyne and Wear were responsible for building many vessels, which served Britain during the First World War. This set remembers some of those warships that took part in the Battle of Jutland from 31 May to 1 June 1916. During the battle over 6,000 British sailors lost their lives and 14 Royal Naval vessels were sunk. The losses included the battlecruisers HMS Queen Mary and HMS Invincible, as well as the destroyers HMS Shark, HMS Sparrowhawk and HMS Turbulent, all built on Tyneside. Their memory lives on.
