This course explores the foundations of policy making in developing countries. The goal is to spell out various policy options and to quantify the trade-offs between them. We will study the different facets of human development: education, health, gender, the family, land relations, risk, informal and formal norms and institutions. This is an empirical class. For each topic, we will study several concrete examples chosen from around the world. While studying each of these topics, we will ask: What determines the decisions of poor households in developing countries? What constraints are they subject to? Is there a scope for policy (by government, international organizations, or non-governmental organizations (NGOs))? What policies have been tried out? Have they been successful? Learning to Groove is an audio resource telling the story of the Tomorrow’s Warriors band as its young musicians learn the art of jazz. Jason Toynbee, leader of the What Is Black British Jazz research project at The Open University explains how this informal type of music education is playing an important and alternative role. Professional relationships with young people

Description

In some people's eyes the development of relationships is a good end in itself as it is in relationships that we express our humanity. Young people with few good-quality relationships in their lives often find that entering into informal relationships with adults who respect accept like and really listen to them is a new life experience. These relationships can offer the young people new perspectives on approaching developing and managing quality relationships of their own. This free course explores different approaches in developing relationships and working practices which can inform work with young people.

Continuity and learning

Description

This free course has a practical and professional development focus. You will explore interactive dimensions of workplace learning: how people and workplace cultures create formal informal planned and unplanned opportunities to learn. You will read about 'biographical learning' research where adults develop narratives to better understand key points of their learning lives. You will plan and carry out a brief informal interview with a colleague and your colleague will interview you on themes of learning and work. To complete this OpenLearn course you will write a short draft of the key points of the interview and reflect on your own learning biography.

Description

In this course, we will study the different facets of human development: education, health, gender, the family, land relations, risk, informal and formal norms and institutions. While studying each of these topics, we will ask: What determines the decisions of poor households in developing countries? What constraints are they subject to? Is there a scope for policy (by government, international organizations, or NGOs)? What policies have been tried out? Have they been successful?
