Robert Robson (28), a groom belonging to Annfield Plain, was charged on remand at North Shields Police Court yesterday, with having stolen a purse and 8s 8d in money from the person of Isabella Fairweather on the 29th ult. Prosecutrix stated that on Tuesday morning last she was walking along Linskill Terrace when the accused passed her. He mumbled something as he was passing and thinking he was speaking to her she stopped and asked him what he wanted. He then snatched a purse she was carrying in her hand and succeeded in getting it from her. He ran away and witness gave chase. Accused was afterwards caught and given in to custody. A young man named Robert Brown said he joined in the chase and eventually caught the accused after a long run. Accused had the purse in his possession and witness gave him into custody. Accused admitted the theft saying he was going to Newcastle to look for employment and wanted money for his train fare. The magistrates committed him to prison for one month and highly commended the witness Brown for the assistance he had rendered?. These images are a selection from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 in the collection of Tyne & Wear Archives (TWA ref DX1388/1). Isabella McQue alias Hubbart, arrested for stealing a sealskin coat

Description

Name: Isabella McQue alias Hubbart Arrested for: not given Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 18 February 1915 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-250-Isabella McQue AKA Hubbart The Shields Daily News for 24 February 1915 reports: ?THEFT OF A SEALSKIN COAT. Today at North Shields, Isabella McQue or Hubbard (40) was charged with stealing an imitation sealskin coat, value 1 10s, the property of Cissie Diaz, 18 Mill Street, on January 14th. The prosecutrix stated that on the date mentioned she met the prisoner in Duke Street, who told her that she had just come from Edinburgh. Witness took her into her own house and sent her on an errand. Witness then went into a neighbour?s house and looking out of the window saw the prisoner going along the street wearing the imitation sealskin coat. She gave information to the police. Emma Bell, second-hand dealer, said that a woman came to her shop a month ago with the coat produced and said she had been singing in the streets and a lady had given her the coat, but it was too showy and she asked witness to exchange it for another one. Witness did so, feeling sorry for the woman. Detective Mason stated that he saw the accused at 40 Church Way and told her he was making enquiries about the stolen coat. She at first denied that she knew anything about it but afterwards said she stole it and left it at a second-hand shop on the road to Newcastle. Accused made her 31st appearance. Since 1911, however, she had been in a situation at Edinburgh. She was committed for one month?. These images are taken from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 (TWAM ref. DX1388/1). This set is our selection of the best mugshots taken during the First World War. They have been chosen because of the sharpness and general quality of the images. The album doesn?t record the details of each prisoner?s crimes, just their names and dates of arrest. In order to discover the stories behind the mugshots, staff from Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums visited North Shields Local Studies Library where they carefully searched through microfilm copies of the ?Shields Daily News? looking for newspaper reports of the court cases. The newspaper reports have been transcribed and added below each mugshot. Combining these two separate records gives us a fascinating insight into life on the Home Front during the First World War. These images document the lives of people of different ages and backgrounds, both civilians and soldiers. Our purpose here is not to judge them but simply to reflect the realities of their time.
