DATUM for Health: Research data management training for health studies

Description

The DATUM for Health training programme is aimed at postgraduate research (i.e. doctoral) students (PGR) in health studies, including those whose PhD has a health focus but who are not necessarily registered in a school/faculty of health/medicine (e.g. in psychology, social sciences). The programme covers both generic and discipline-specific issues, focussing on the management of qualitative, unstructured data, and is suitable for students at any stage of their PhD. It aims to provide PGR students with the knowledge to manage their research data at every stage in the data lifecycle, from its creation to its final storage or destruction. Students learn how to use their data more effectively and efficiently, how to store and destroy it securely, and how to make it available to a wider audien

Control systems analysis for engineers

Description

This site contains links to resources for an introduction to control analysis for second year engineering undergraduate. The main focus is on block diagrams, offsets, pole computations, understanding stability/instability, root-loci, bode, nyquist, margins and an introduction to lead and lag compensation. The focus is on analysis not design which is covered in a later course. The resources here include the lecture hand outs which include embedded tutorial questions, some powerpoints for structuring lectures, some games/quizzes for lectures, a MATLAB laboratory based on significant prior practice, a FLASH lecture and then a formal laboratory test under exam conditions and a small data base of CAA developed on webct (here provided in a zip file). These were developed at the University of Shef

Introduction to modelling for 1st year engineers

Description

These resources cover an introduction to modelling for first year engineering undergraduate. The main focus is on electrical and mechanical systems, but there is also some discussion of dc motors, fluids and heat as well as an introduction to time series modelling. The main emphasis is on why modelling is important and how to go about doing this from first principles (e.g. Kirchhoff's laws, Newton's Laws, etc.). Given the focus is on new students arriving at University, there is no attempt to develop models beyond second order. The resources here include the lecture hand out (pdf) which includes embedded tutorial questions, some powerpoints for structuring lectures , flash animations to step through modelling process for electrical circuits and a large data base of CAA developed on webct

Using MATLAB for engineers

Description

Introductory course on learning and using MATLAB aimed at 1st year engineering undergraduate. These were developed at the University of Sheffield and authored by J A Rossiter from The Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering. The files include a slightly animated power point slide (runs via web) which includes audio. Hence a little like a lecture. The source m-files mentioned are also supplied in the zip files mentioned. These m-files cover a group of topics. Read the instruction file to learn how to make 'lectures' available to students. More information for control with MATLAB is stored under the control contribution by same author and on the website http://controleducation.group.shef.ac.uk/acs211/notes_webct_quizzes_acs211.htm

Poetry in Context: The First World War Poetry Digital Archive

Description

Launched to mark the 90th Anniversary of Armistice on 11 November 2008, The First World War Poetry Digital Archive promises to be one of the richest resources on the web to support the teaching and study of literature that emanated from the First World War. The story begins early. In 1996–1998 the University of Oxford led a pioneering digitisation project that photographed the manuscripts, letters and war records of the poet Wilfred Owen. These were then released freely onto the web with additional online tutorials and tools for researchers. An influential project that was cited regularly in print and online publications, it boasted the first web-based tutorial to teach English literature, centered on the poet Isaac Rosenberg and his poem ’Break of Day in the Trenches’. Building upon

DSpace as a LOR Presentation to the UoC UNESCO Chair in e-Learning

Description

This item contains a joint presentation given to the UoC UNESCO Chair in e-Learning by Jorum and the NDLR which happened on the 13/12/10 in Barcelona. As part of the presentation, a number of screen capture movies were shown during the feature demonstration section - these are attached to the item. The presentation was made by Gareth Waller (Jorum) and Bob Strunz (NDLR) and highlighted the modifications both projects made to DSpace in order to support learning and teaching materials.
