Elswick Works cricket team

Description

Elswick Works Cricket XI, 1891 (TWAM ref. 1027/377). ?Workshop of the World? is a phrase often used to describe Britain?s manufacturing dominance during the Nineteenth Century. It?s also a very apt description for the Elswick Works and Scotswood Works of Vickers Armstrong and its predecessor companies. These great factories, situated in Newcastle along the banks of the River Tyne, employed hundreds of thousands of men and women and built a huge variety of products for customers around the globe. The Elswick Works was established by William George Armstrong (later Lord Armstrong) in 1847 to manufacture hydraulic cranes. From these relatively humble beginnings the company diversified into many fields including shipbuilding, armaments and locomotives. By 1953 the Elswick Works covered 70 acres and extended over a mile along the River Tyne. This set of images, mostly taken from our Vickers Armstrong collection, includes fascinating views of the factories at Elswick and Scotswood, the products they produced and the people that worked there. By preserving these archives we can ensure that their legacy lives on. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons. Jesmond Dene in Winter

Description

Scenic view of Jesmond Dene in the snow, January 1963 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/30662F). If you look carefully on the left there appears to be a mysterious headless body walking towards the bridge. The North East has some of the most stunning scenery in the United Kingdom. The region looks great in any weather but adding a touch of snow or frost can really transform the appearance of the landscape. Tyne & Wear Archives is proud to present a series of wintry images from our collections to celebrate the beauty of North East England. Victoria Bridge, Washington

Description

View of the riverside area near the Victoria Bridge, Washington, May 1965 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/36063EE). 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the creation of Washington New Town. It was officially established on 24 July 1964 and since then the area has witnessed massive changes. Old pit terraces have been replaced with modern housing, thousands of new jobs have been created, great new shopping and leisure facilities have been built and a derelict industrial landscape has been reclaimed and transformed. To celebrate this anniversary Tyne & Wear Archives has brought together a set of images of Washington as it was 50 years ago. These were commissioned by Washington Development Corporation, which was responsible for planning, designing and building the New Town. The images are an important reminder of Washington's past. They reflect how much of the town has changed beyond recognition. The town will continue to evolve over the next fifty years and we must make sure that the memories continue to be preserved. Ice Skating at Christmas

Description

This set, taken from the Spence Family collection at Tyne & Wear Archives offers an intimate view in to a Family enjoying the festive season during this time of change and the invention of Christmas. Reference: DX 1295-1-1-01-01 At the beginning of the 19th Century, Christmas was hardly celebrated. However, during the Victorian Era Christmas as we know it today was invented, and our modest medieval traditions of evergreens and food were transformed. Much if this change was due to Queen Victoria and her marriage to the German-born Prince Albert. Albert introduced many aspects of Christmas as we know it, most notably the first Christmas tree in the royal family?s home. This was a tradition Albert brought to his family from his own childhood in Germany, but also to every other family in Britain. As a result the Victorians also transformed the idea of Christmas so that it became centred around the family, and our modern day traditions are deeply rooted in those of Victorian Society. Description

This is a photograph of the Viola border in South Marine Park, South Shields, August 1950. Reference: DT.TUR/2/5197T This photograph is part of a set that has been created to celebrate the opening of South Tyneside Council?s new leisure centre, Haven Point, on 28 October. It focuses in particular on life along the foreshore at South Shields during the 1950s but also includes a few images from further down the coast. South Shields has long been a popular seaside resort and also has a proud industrial heritage. Times have changed, though, and many of the old industries such as shipbuilding and coal mining have disappeared. Rather than stand still and accept this change in fortunes, South Tyneside Council is pressing ahead with an ambitious vision to transform the Foreshore, Town Centre and Riverside areas into vibrant destinations. Haven Point is a key part of this change. Tyne & Wear Archives and South Tyneside Local Studies Library have a vital role to play in this. As South Shields is regenerated and forever changed the Archives and Local Studies serve as its memory. We keep alive a window into the town?s past, preserving the history of people, places and industries that no longer exist. South Shields must look forward but its sense of direction will be lost if it forgets where it came from. These images, together with a fantastic selection from South Tyneside Local Studies Library, can be seen in a digital exhibition at Haven Point. You can also see images from the Local Studies Library online at www.southtynesideimages.org.uk/.
