LSE Senior Health Officer 1963-1970 'He first came to the School in 1952 when he was Research Assistant at the Maudsley Hospital's Institute of Psychiatry. The Institute wanted to do a pioneer study to see whether a clinical service incorporating psychiatric counselling was a practical proposition, and LSE was prepared to try it. Dr Read feels the School can be proud that it was prepared to recognise the value of psychiatric counselling so early...After completing this study, Dr Read stayed on as a part-time adviser, becoming full-time in 1959 and Senior Health Service Officer when the School Health Service was launched in 1963, and under him the service has expanded in many directions.' Senior Porter, worked at LSE 1927-1976 'In October 1927 Mrs Mair interviewed for an additiona, lift-boy. The temporary job at £1 a week, 9.am to 7.30pm was offered to a boy who already knew through friends the social life of LSE. He much enjoyed the atmosphere ar the Drama Society shows, boxing matches and the Malden Sports days. SoTed Brown happily accepted...He did not stay long working in the lifts but transferred to the wider duties of a porter. And when the House Manager now tells prospective porters at interview that they will not be asked to do things he hasn't done himself, the statement can be proved to the hilt. Suitably prompted he recalls routines like re-addressing all staff letters to their homes at 3.pm in vacations, or emergencies ranging from repeatedly rescuing the Beaver mascot during rags (until its rumoured drowning in the Thames), to an alarming incident with an ill student late one evening in 1930, which lead to the creation of Evening Deans. In 1939 the porters were trained in firefighting, and the night after the school was evacuated to Cambridge, since all the nightwatchmen were by then in the Territorials, Mr Brown patrolled the buildings alone in the first balackout. This heralded the only break in his service to LSE, when between 1940 and 1945 he was called up for war work as an engineer and fitter in Newark. Then the school negotiated urgently with the Ministry of Labour to get him back to prepare the battered Houghton Street Buildings for reopening and the 1945-6 session...' LSE Seamstress 1971-1984. 'Mrs Baldwin has not been seen around the School much; she has spent most of the last thirteen years cheerfully working, or should it be 'beavering' away in her underground linen room. Over the years she has sewn curtains or nets for most of the windows in the Houhgton Street buildings and some of the halls of residence, as well as making hundreds of cushion and divan covers. Almost everyone at the School who wears a uniform or overall has had a button or a name tape or even, on the odd occasion, a patch to the seat of their trousers put on by Ethel. As the Christmas festivities approach each year she has been extra busy - in the Founders' Room blowing up balloons, making decorations or dressing the Christmas tree fairy in preparation for the childrens party.' Professor of Economics 'Alan Prest came to the School as Professor of Economics in 1970. He had previoulsy been Stanley Jevons Professor at the University of Manchester and before that Fellow (and Bursar) of Christ's College, Cambridge and University Lecturer in Economics. Alan Prest's name is know to every A Level economics student in Britain for his "UK Economy- A Manual of Applied Economics,"co-edited with D.J. Coppock, which is now in its ninth edition. To the economics profession he is well known for much more. The title of his chair is Economics with special reference to the public sector, and in this field he has been pre-eminent. His "Public Finance in Theory and Practice" first appeared in 1960 and since then has been the standard undergraduate text in Britain...Overseas his "Public Finance in Developing Countries" has enjoyed equal success, and this - and his wide travelling- has attracted many overseas students to take his M.Sc. option in the subject. The hallmark of his scholarly work has been a blend of analytical insight with a concern for the practical realities. The latter lead him to be more sceptical than most of the recent developments in the theory of public policy and to criticise - entertainingly and effectively - proposals for the reform of the tax system. In this he wrote with considerable experience, having served on a variety of official bodies including the Departmental Committee on Liquor Licensing and the Royal Commission on Civil Liability and Compensation for Personal Injury. In the School, too, Alan has borne more than his share of administrative burdens. He has been Convenor; he has been responsible for Economics Analytical and Descriptive, and he has served on the Senate of the University and its Academic Council. He has always been a concerned and conscientious teacher, renowned for his prompt and detailed comments on the writings of students and colleagues alike. Face to face his encyclopaedic knowledge is always leavened by a quiet, dry sense of humour...' Professor of Social Administration, 1969-1983 Information from LSE Magazine November 1984 No68 p.27 (Retirements) Garth Plowman came to the School in 1964 as Reader in Social Administration, having previously been a lecturer first in Manchester (1951-55) and later in Swansea (1955-63). His background was a BA in PPP from Oxford (1950) and an MA in Psychology from Berkeley California (1951). For many years Garth Plowman was Chairman of the Advisory Committee for the Extra-Mural Diploma in Social Work which provided a two year part-time course, mainly for married women seeking to enter social work after bring up their families. It was virtually the only course in the country designed with this aim in mind. Garth took a great interest in this course and helped build up a constituency of support for it within the University. He was also the first editor of the Journal of Social Policy (1972-77) and then moved to be chairman of the editorial board (1977-80). He played a crucial role in establishing the journal as one of the most widely respected in the subject. His main outside interest has always been music. He is an accomplished amateur pianist and composer and has had one of his compositions for the piano performed at a public concert. Librarian, Law Collection 'Kenneth Parsons, who retired at the end of the session, joined the Library in 1963 after a varied career. Having obtained the University of London Diploma in Librarianship, his first appointment was as an Assistant Librarian at University College. He then spent three years as Deputy Librarian University College, Khartoum, which was developing rapidly, before returning to Europe in 1954 to take up the post of Librarian (Classification) at the headquarters of the Food and Agricultural Organisation in Rome. This experience qualified him admirably for his appointment here in December 1963 as an Assistant Librarian with special responsibility for our extensive collections of the documents of international organizations. Meanwhile, however, he had acquired legal qualifications and had been called to the Bar; and so in 1967 he was transferred to take charge of all aspects of our Law Collections...'LSE Magazine, November 1984, No 68, p26 IMAGELIBRARY/586 Persistent URL: archives.lse.ac.uk/dserve.exe?dsqServer=lib-4.lse.ac.uk&a...License

School Accountant. Picture taken by Dave Elsworth 'Brian Parkin came to the School in November 1956 from the National Coal Board. As Assistant Accountant he was very much involved in his first years here in putting the School's accounting system on to a modern basis. His skill and competence in such matters were such that de facto he was running this side of the School before he in fact became Accountant in October 1964...A mark of his energy and ability is that whilst discharging full-time, and often more than full-time, duties at LSE he recently added an Open University BA degree to his FCA qualification. It is a matter of great regret that he has decided to retire early...' Department of Government. Picture taken by Gavin Allan-Wood 'The accidents of war guided Keith Panter-Brick into academic life. having embarked on a business career, his plans, like those of so many others, were abruptly set aside by mobilization as a member of the Territorial Army in the late summer of 1939. He spent the latter part of the war in a POW camp in Poland, and, as he puts it "while hoeing the turnips etc turned my mind to philosophy." With the war's end he chose to pursue these interests more systematically and went up to Keble College, Oxford to read PPE. His first degree was followed by a BPhil in politics. He was appointed to the School in 1950 and...in addition to periods of sabbatical leave spent in Africa, he was seconded from 1965-1967 as Professor of Public Administration at Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria...His teaching extended outside the bounds of the Department of Government, much of it in co-operation with the International Relations Department, while his close involvement with the Institute of Commonwealth Studies has led to his editing two important studies of Nigerian politics. For many years he was the vice-chairman of the Admissions Committee with responsibility for admissions to the BSc Econ.' P.F.D.
