'Silverbriar' at night

Description

View of the cargo ship ?Silverbriar? at night, February 1948 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/1232W). She was launched at the North Sands shipyard of J.L. Thompson & Sons, Sunderland, 21 May 1947. This set celebrates the achievements of the famous Sunderland shipbuilding firm Joseph L. Thompson & Sons. The company?s origins date back to 1846 when the firm was known as Robert Thompson & Sons. Robert Thompson senior died in 1860, leaving his second son Joseph Lowes Thompson in control. In 1870 the shipyard completed its last wooden vessel and was then adapted for iron shipbuilding. By 1880 the firm had expanded its operations over much of North Sands and in 1884 completed the construction of Manor Quay, which served as fitting out and repair facilities. For many years in the late nineteenth century the yard was the most productive in Sunderland and in 1894 had the fourth largest output of any shipyard in the world. The Depression affected the firm severely in the early 1930s and no vessels were launched from 1931 to 1934. However, during those years the company developed a hull design giving greater efficiency and economy in service. During the Second World War the prototype developed by Joseph L. Thompson & Sons proved so popular that it was used by the US Government as the basis of over 2,700 Liberty ships built at American shipyards between 1942 and 1945. After the War the North Sands shipyard went on to build many fine cargo ships, oil tankers and bulk carriers. Sadly the shipyard closed in 1979, although it briefly reopened in 1986 to construct the crane barge ITM Challenger. Launch of the bulk carrier 'G.M. Livanos' at the North Sands shipyard of J.L. Thompson & Sons, 26 April 1968 (TWAM ref. DS.JLT/4/PH/1/723/2/1). Double bottoms near completion

Description

Double bottoms near completion of ?Nicola?, the first SD14 to be built by Austin & Pickersgill, 23 October 1967 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/51703B). This set celebrates the ?Nicola?, the first in a long line of standard ships designed by the Sunderland shipyard of Austin & Pickersgill Ltd. The images document her construction from October 1967 through to her completion in February 1968. The shipbuilders commissioned the Newcastle-based firm Turners (Photography) Ltd to take weekly progress shots of the ?Nicola? and these images have given us a unique view of her development. She was the first SD14 to be completed (the name stands for ?Shelter Deck 14,000 tons deadweight?) and was designed as a replacement for the surviving ?Liberty ships?, built by American yards during the Second World War. Those Liberty ships had played a vital role in the Allied victory but by the 1960s they were fast approaching the end of their working lives. The SD14 developed by Austin & Pickersgill met the demand for economic and reliable cargo ships. The simplicity of the design meant that it could be marketed by the shipbuilders at a very competitive price. It?s success is reflected by the fact that over the course of 20 years 211 ships were built to the SD14 design by Austin Pickersgill and its licensees. Sunderland can be very proud of its remarkable shipbuilding and engineering history and the SD14 is one the City?s finest achievements. Launch party of HMS Ghurka

Description

Launch party of HMS Ghurka, launched at the Hebburn shipyard of Hawthorn Leslie on 29 April 1907 (TWAM ref. 4923/1). HMS Ghurka was a Tribal-class destroyer. Tragically, HMS Ghurka was sunk on 8 February 1917 after striking a German mine off the coast at Dungeness in Kent. There's so much to enjoy in this photo - the shipyard workers in the background, the mysterious figure who appears to be falling backwards off the stage, the hats ... The shipyard of R. & W. Hawthorn Leslie at Hebburn built many fine warships. During the First World War the firm built 2 light cruisers, 3 destroyer leaders and 25 torpedo boat destroyers. The firm also built machinery and boilers for 2 battleships, and a further 3 light cruisers. These and other warships built by Hawthorn Leslie before the War, are remembered in this set. There are remarkable images of warships under construction at Hebburn, as well as fascinating shots of the people who attended the launches. The set also contains majestic views of the ships at sea. The images are not only a testimony to the skill of those who designed and built these ships but also to the courage of those who sailed in them. Grand Entrance - Mauretania

Description

There were 9 decks in the Mauretania and this was the Grand Entrance on the boat deck. Also on this deck was the first-class library, the first-class lounge and music room, the first-class smoking room and the verandah café. The Mauretania was built by the shipbuilders Swan Hunter and Wigham Richardson Ltd, at the Wallsend shipyard and was one of the most famous ships ever built on Tyneside. Working on the bow of 'Naess Crusader'

Description

View of prefabrication work on the bow of ?Naess Crusader? at the North Sands shipyard, Sunderland, 23 October 1972 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/60707A). These photographs were taken by the Newcastle-based firm Turners (Photography) Ltd. They celebrate the construction of the OBO (oil/bulk/ore) carrier ?Naess Crusader?, covering the early stages in January 1972 through her launch on 21 December 1972 to her completion and sea trials in July 1973. ?Naess Crusader? and her sister ship ?Nordic Chieftain? were built by Sunderland Shipbuilders Ltd at the firm?s North Sands Shipyard for Anglo Eastern Bulkships Ltd. They were the largest ships ever built on the River Wear. The memory of ?Naess Crusader? is integral to the Sunderland Keel Line, a new public artwork, opened in 2015, which celebrates the City?s shipbuilding heritage. The Keel Line is 291.7 metres long and that distance was chosen because it represents the full length of ?Naess Crusader?. This album is a reminder of Sunderland?s proud industrial heritage and a tribute to the skill and dedication of her shipyard workers. The stern of 'Naess Crusader' nears completion

Description

Work nearing completion at the North Sands shipyard, Sunderland, on the stern of the OBO carrier 'Naess Crusader', 29 August 1972 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/60461C). These photographs were taken by the Newcastle-based firm Turners (Photography) Ltd. They celebrate the construction of the OBO (oil/bulk/ore) carrier ?Naess Crusader?, covering the early stages in January 1972 through her launch on 21 December 1972 to her completion and sea trials in July 1973. ?Naess Crusader? and her sister ship ?Nordic Chieftain? were built by Sunderland Shipbuilders Ltd at the firm?s North Sands Shipyard for Anglo Eastern Bulkships Ltd. They were the largest ships ever built on the River Wear. The memory of ?Naess Crusader? is integral to the Sunderland Keel Line, a new public artwork, opened in 2015, which celebrates the City?s shipbuilding heritage. The Keel Line is 291.7 metres long and that distance was chosen because it represents the full length of ?Naess Crusader?. This album is a reminder of Sunderland?s proud industrial heritage and a tribute to the skill and dedication of her shipyard workers. Preparing the cargo ship 'Crofter' for launch

Description

View of the cargo ship ?Crofter? being prepared for launch at the shipyard of John Readhead & Sons Ltd, South Shields, 16 August 1951 (TWAM ref. 1061/1086). This set celebrates the achievements of the shipyard of John Readhead & Sons. The firm has played a significant role in the North East?s illustrious shipbuilding history and the development of South Shields. The company began in 1865 when John Readhead, a shipyard manager, entered into business with J Softley at a small yard on the Lawe at South Shields. Following the dissolution of the partnership in 1872, it continued as John Readhead & Co on the same site until 1880 when the High West Yard was purchased. After Readhead?s four sons were taken into the business in 1888 the company traded as John Readhead & Sons becoming a limited company in 1908. In 1968 the company was absorbed by the Swan Hunter Group and in 1977 became part of the nationalised British Shipbuilders. In the same year the last vessel was launched and the site was sold off in 1984. Readheads was prolific and built over 600 ships from 1865 to 1968, including 87 vessels for the Hain Steamship Company Ltd and over forty for the Strick Line Ltd. The shipyard also built four ships for the Prince Line, founded by Sir James Knott. The firm built vessels, which were involved in the major conflicts of the Twentieth Century. During the First World War they built patrol vessels and ?x? lighters (motor landing craft used in the Gallipoli campaign) for the Admiralty. Launch of the cargo ship 'Baron Belhaven'

New tractor at the Elswick Works

Description

New Tractor at the Elswick Works, 24 October 1949 (TWAM ref. DS.VA/9/PH/3/3). This appears to be a prototype of the Vickers VR180. ?Workshop of the World? is a phrase often used to describe Britain?s manufacturing dominance during the Nineteenth Century. It?s also a very apt description for the Elswick Works and Scotswood Works of Vickers Armstrong and its predecessor companies. These great factories, situated in Newcastle along the banks of the River Tyne, employed hundreds of thousands of men and women and built a huge variety of products for customers around the globe. The Elswick Works was established by William George Armstrong (later Lord Armstrong) in 1847 to manufacture hydraulic cranes. From these relatively humble beginnings the company diversified into many fields including shipbuilding, armaments and locomotives. By 1953 the Elswick Works covered 70 acres and extended over a mile along the River Tyne. This set of images, mostly taken from our Vickers Armstrong collection, includes fascinating views of the factories at Elswick and Scotswood, the products they produced and the people that worked there. Gauge of Railway: 4 feet 8½ inches. Principal Dimensions. Cylinders dia: 17 inches. Cylinders stroke: 24 inches. Wheels (Dia. of coupled): 4 feet 3 inches. Wheel-base - total: 12 feet 6 inches. Water capacity: 1000 gallons. Fuel capacity: 80 cubic feet = 1.75 tons. Heating surface ? total: 945 square feet. Grate area: 15.5 square feet. Working pressure: 160 lbs per square inch. Total weight in working order: 45.2 tons. Tractive force taking 90% of the working pressure: 19600 lbs. Tractive force taking 75% of the working pressure: 16320 lbs. Approximate shipping space: 3095 cubic feet. Approximate gross weight packed for shipment: 39.5 tons. Code Word: WARHAM This album celebrates the achievements of the Hawthorn Leslie locomotive works at Forth Banks, Newcastle upon Tyne. The works were established by Robert Hawthorn in January 1817 and in 1820 his brother, William Hawthorn joined him as a partner. The firm initially manufactured stationary engines but within a few years diversified into marine engineering and in 1831 produced its first locomotive engine for the Stockton and Darlington Railway. In 1870 the firm established a separate marine engine works on the River Tyne at St. Peter?s and from 1882 the Forth Banks Works became devoted entirely to the manufacture of locomotives. In 1885 the firm amalgamated with the shipyard of Andrew Leslie at Hebburn, creating the world-famous shipbuilding and engineering company R and W. Hawthorn, Leslie & Co. Ltd. The Forth Banks Works of Hawthorn Leslie produced engines of all types and sizes for railways around the world. The output of the Forth Banks Works included a large number of tank engines for industrial works and collieries and the firm established a speciality in the construction of crane locomotives. The images in this set date from the early twentieth century and are a reminder of Newcastle upon Tyne?s proud industrial heritage. They are taken from a series of photograph albums produced by Hawthorn Leslie. The albums were kindly donated to Tyne & Wear Archives by Alan C. Baker and T.D. Allen Civil. Stall entrances at the Paramount Theatre, Newcastle

View of the entrances to the stalls at the Paramount Theatre, Pilgrim Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, September 1931 (TWAM ref. DX1677/1/1). The Odeon Cinema opened on Pilgrim Street, Newcastle upon Tyne on 7 September 1931. It as originally known as the Paramount Theatre but was taken over by Odeon in 1939. The Odeon?s luxurious décor made it one of the country?s finest cinemas and arguably the North East?s best loved. Most of the images in this album date from its opening and convey a real sense of the building?s elegance and beauty. Sadly the cinema closed in 2002 and was demolished in 2017. This image is from an album which was kindly donated to the Archives by the Northumberland & Newcastle Society.
