Description
This course is a requirement for completion of the Urban Design Certificate Program. It investigates the complex nature of 'successful' urban design and attempts to identify and evaluate examples of urban design that are at the leading edge of practice, anticipating the future. The seminar will deal with two parallel questions: what are the key trends that will shape the future form and function of cities, and how will these changes affect the role of the urban designer? The first part of the seminar focuses on the present, and the second part of the semester will consider the future. After the course surveys the landscape of contemporary urban design practice, the challenge it will pose to students will be to identify the trajectory of cities and city design from both physical and socia This course is a requirement for completion of the Urban Design Certificate Program. Description
Museum Ethics. The Museum world, like most professions, encounters various ethical problems. This short talk will consider the ethics of conservation and reconstruction, and of human remains, but will mostly discuss ethical problems associated with the acquisition of cultural property from other countries. Archaeologists are particularly concerned that the trade in antiquities leads to the looting of sites, and illegal export of valuable items. How far can British and American museums continue to maintain collections from the great ancient civilisations when they are unable to acquire important recent finds from other countries? Wales; http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/2.0/uk/Subjects

This is a module framework. It can be viewed online or downloaded as a zip file. As taught Autumn Semester 2010. This module will focus on the treatment of war or the representation of war in art broadly conceived: war stories, war photography, war paintings, war films, war music, even war architecture - war memorials and war museums. It will seek to ask in what ways such works contribute to our understanding of war, and by extension our understanding of international relations. How effective are they? Can works of the imagination - works of art - reach parts that other works cannot reach? How? What strategies do they employ? Do they have to be explicit? Do they have to be easy to read (or watch or listen to)? In what ways are we affected by them? What difference can they make? Module This is a module framework. Art museums are powerful and contested institutions. They are also innovative sites of architectural and artistic practice. From the exhibitionary complex of the nineteenth century to the experiential complex of today, this course investigates the art museum from historical and contemporary perspectives, striking a balance between theoretical investigation and case studies of recent exhibitions and museum buildings. Where and why did the concept of the public art museum emerge, and how have its functions changed over time? How do art museums continue to shape our definitions of what art is? How have they responded to recent critiques of the self-described 'universal' museum and to claims for the ethical display of ill-gotten artifacts or the restitution of such objects as Greek vases and Art museums are powerful and contested institutions. From 1913, John Alfred Charlton Deas, a former curator at Sunderland Museum, organised several handling sessions for the blind, first offering an invitation to the children from the Sunderland Council Blind School, to handle a few of the collections at Sunderland Museum, which was ?eagerly accepted?. Onlookers at one of the attractions held at the Hoppings on the Town Moor. 1940's The Hoppings is a popular fair in the North East of England, held in the last full week of June every year on Newcastle's Town Moor, spanning around 40 acres of land. The Hoppings started out as a Temperance Festival in 1882, when Newcastle Temperance organisations decided to revive the annual gatherings that they had previously held, but included different festivities to coincide, to counter-attract the 'Summer Race Meeting' at Gosforth Park, which was seen as a source of drunkenness. It proved to be a great success and the fair is still being enjoyed to this very day. Ref: TWAS:944/2429 (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons. This photograph shows a storehouse at the shipbuilder Wigham Richardson's Neptune Yard. In 1881 the owner John Wigham Richardson made a large sundial, which can be seen here hanging on the storehouse wall. He also wrote a motto underneath: 'Watching these fleeting hours soon past, remember that which comes at last.' The storehouse was taken down when Wigham Richarson merged with Swan Hunter in 1902, but the sundial was preserved, and today it is in Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums' collections.
