'Aghios Nicolaos' is launched by William Doxford & Sons

Description

View of the shipyard of William Doxford & Sons Ltd, showing the launch of the cargo ship ?Aghios Nicolaos', while the ?Dona Evgenia? is completed at the fitting out quay, 11 October 1954 (TWAM ref. DS.DOX/4/PH/1/805/3/2) Tyne & Wear Archives is proud to present a selection of images from its Sunderland shipbuilding collections. The set has been produced to celebrate Sunderland History Fair on 7 June 2014. It's a reminder of the thousands of vessels launched on the River Wear and the many outstanding achievements of Sunderland?s shipyards and their workers. These photographs reflect Sunderland?s history of innovation in shipbuilding and marine engineering from the development of turret ships in the 1890s through to the design for SD14s in the 1960s. The Sunderland shipbuilding collections are full of fascinating stories. Some of these are represented in this set, such as the ?Rondefjell?, launched in two halves on the River Wear by John Crown & Sons Ltd and then joined together on the River Tyne. The set also shows the vital part that Sunderland?s shipbuilding industry played during the First World War. William Doxford & Sons Ltd built Royal Naval destroyers such as HMS Opal, which served in the Battle of Jutland, while other yards constructed cargo ships to help keep these shores supplied. Visit of the Channel Fleet to Sunderland, 1895

Description

Laying a memorial stone on the South Pier, Sunderland to commemorate the visit of the Channel Fleet, 12 September 1895 (TWAM ref. 3768/8). This set of images celebrates the 300th Anniversary of the establishment of the Port of Sunderland. The port authority was constituted in 1717 by Act of Parliament, which appointed the River Wear Commissioners to manage and improve the harbour and river. Since then the port has changed beyond recognition with the construction of piers, docks and quays and the dredging of the River Wear to make it wider and deeper. These developments were vital to the coal trade on which the region?s prosperity depended. The improvement of the river was also essential to the success of shipbuilding in Sunderland as well as allied industries such as marine engineering and ship repairing. These images are a reflection of Sunderland?s proud industrial history. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share these digital images within the spirit of The Commons. Frozen Pond at Christmas

Description

This set, taken from the Spence Family collection at Tyne & Wear Archives offers an intimate view in to a Family enjoying the festive season during this time of change and the invention of Christmas. Reference: DX 1295-1-1-01-02 At the beginning of the 19th Century, Christmas was hardly celebrated. However, during the Victorian Era Christmas as we know it today was invented, and our modest medieval traditions of evergreens and food were transformed. Much if this change was due to Queen Victoria and her marriage to the German-born Prince Albert. Albert introduced many aspects of Christmas as we know it, most notably the first Christmas tree in the royal family?s home. This was a tradition Albert brought to his family from his own childhood in Germany, but also to every other family in Britain. As a result the Victorians also transformed the idea of Christmas so that it became centred around the family, and our modern day traditions are deeply rooted in those of Victorian Society. Female shipyard workers at South Shields

Description

Female shipyard workers posing at the launch of the cargo ship 'Obra' from the shipyard of John Readhead & Sons Ltd, South Shields, 7 November 1945 (TWAM ref. DS.RDD/4/PH/1/548/1). This set celebrates the achievements of the shipyard of John Readhead & Sons. The firm has played a significant role in the North East?s illustrious shipbuilding history and the development of South Shields. The company began in 1865 when John Readhead, a shipyard manager, entered into business with J Softley at a small yard on the Lawe at South Shields. Following the dissolution of the partnership in 1872, it continued as John Readhead & Co on the same site until 1880 when the High West Yard was purchased. After Readhead?s four sons were taken into the business in 1888 the company traded as John Readhead & Sons becoming a limited company in 1908. In 1968 the company was absorbed by the Swan Hunter Group and in 1977 became part of the nationalised British Shipbuilders. In the same year the last vessel was launched and the site was sold off in 1984. Readheads was prolific and built over 600 ships from 1865 to 1968, including 87 vessels for the Hain Steamship Company Ltd and over forty for the Strick Line Ltd. The shipyard also built four ships for the Prince Line, founded by Sir James Knott. The firm built vessels, which were involved in the major conflicts of the Twentieth Century. During the First World War they built patrol vessels and ?x? lighters (motor landing craft used in the Gallipoli campaign) for the Admiralty. During the Second World War the firm built tankers for the Normandy Landings. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons. Shipyard of William Doxford & Sons Ltd, Sunderland

Description

This is a Photograph of King George V leaving Doxfords shipyard, Pallion, 15 June 1917. Reference: DS.DOX/6/14/1/3 On 22 November Prince William will be visiting Sunderland and South Tyneside to take part in a number of youth development events. During the visit he will also officially open Haven Point, the new leisure centre in South Shields. To celebrate this Tyne & Wear Archives has produced a short flickr set remembering past royal visits to the region?s shipyards. Most of the visits featured here took place during difficult times and they gave a real boost to public spirits in the face of two World Wars. A short blog relating to these images can be read here . These images are part of the Tyne & Wear Archives Shipyard Collection. In July 2013 the outstanding historical significance of the Collection was recognised by UNESCO through its inscription to the UK Memory of the World Register.
