Politics and the Olympic games - Berlin 1936

Description

The Berlin Summer Olympic Games of 1936 allowed the world its first comprehensive insight into the propagandised war machine that was Hitler’s Third Reich. The Leni Reifenstahl film Olympia provides an uncomfortable and enduring legacy of such propaganda

The Olympic Games and politics

Description

Whilst the Olympic Movement states that politics have no place in sport, political events have nonetheless exerted a significant effect on modern Olympic Games. Three of the most ‘political’ Olympic Games are undoubtedly Berlin, 1936; Mexico, 1968; and Munich, 1972

Funding: Is an Olympic CEO worth more than a Prime Minister

Description

The new Conservative - Liberal Democrat Government coalition recently announced an emergency budget to fight the financial woes that Britain is currently facing. One significant element of their austere approach was to effectively wage war on publically funded quangos in a bid to eliminate unnecessary spending and re-establish public faith in the Governments’ ability to financially manage the country

Olympic legacy-questioning an Olympic legacy for Wales

Description

The legacy impact of the 2012 Games for London – and, by extension, South East England and the country as a whole – has been debated and discussed at length. But the victory of London should be a victory for the UK. Have Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales benefited from our victory to secure the Games? This case study takes a special focus on Wales

OLYMPIC VALUES: Keeping the amateurs amateur

Description

Given the financial clout of professional sport, it is little wonder that many athletes are tempted to turn professional after amateur wins. Boxing is perhaps the clearest example of a sport where athletes are faced with the fundamental amateur v pro debate: do they retain amateur status to live the dream of competing on home soil as Olympic boxers in the London 20102 Games, or take the tempting financial route of lucrative professional contracts and World Championship titles, with the downside of potentially entering the ring too fast than their experience and youth might ideally allow?

Sport always courts controversy

Description

Undoubtedly, the role of an athlete at any major sports competition – including the Olympic and Paralympic Games – is to do their very best to excel within their sport, to beat their personal best, set world records, triumph over their adversaries and ultimately win a place on the winners’ Podium. However, some people argue that athletes are also role models and that they have a social responsibility too. We consider examples from the recent Vancouver 2010 Games that illustrate how perceived negative behaviours by athletes caused a flurry of press coverage and negative reporting. Clearly, the focus of the world is not only on sport, but on all of the actions of Olympic and Paralympic athletes
