Patrick Liljebald, ship's steward, arrested for breaking and entering

Description

Name: Patrick Liljebald Arrested for: not given Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 5 December 1907 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-119-Patrick Liljebald For an image of his accomplice Eilert Tiller see www.flickr.com/photos/twm_news/25961770405/in/album-72157.... The Shields Daily News for 13 December 1907 reports: ?SEAFARING MEN SENT TO PRISON. Patrick Liljebald (35), described as a ship?s steward, of Gothenburg, and Eilert Tiller (20), a Norwegian sailor, were brought up on remand charged with breaking and entering on the 5th December a shop situate on the Union Quay, and stealing therefrom a quantity of cigarettes, tobacco etc, of the value of 1 4s 2d, the property of Messrs E.H. Smith and Co. The Chief Constable (Mr J.H. Huish) withdrew this charge and preferred one of simple larceny. Evidence was given to the effect that PC Armstrong, while on duty on the Union Quay, noticed that a window of the shop mentioned had been broken, and he in consequence kept observation upon the premises. Blowing his whistle and waving his lamp about he attracted the attention of a night watchman ? Lawrence Bonholm ? who came to his assistance. Leaving the latter outside, the officer entered the premises and found the two prisoners who tried to conceal themselves. He took them into custody and had them conveyed to the police station. On being charged with breaking and entering the premises, Liljebald said he had only gone there to get a sleep, while the other prisoner made no reply. They were both sent to prison for one month with hard labour.? These images are a selection from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 in the collection of Tyne & Wear Archives (TWA ref DX1388/1). The Tyne Bridge from The Side

Description

Looking towards the Tyne Bridge, Newcastle upon Tyne, November 1963 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/32626C). Tyne & Wear Archives presents a series of images taken by the Newcastle-based photographers Turners Ltd. The firm had an excellent reputation and was regularly commissioned by local businesses to take photographs of their products and their premises. Turners also sometimes took aerial and street views on their own account and many of those images have survived, giving us a fascinating glimpse of life in the North East of England in the second half of the Twentieth Century. Aerial view of the North Sands shipyard, 1973

Description

Aerial view of the North Sands shipyard, Sunderland, showing ?Naess Crusader? nearing completion at Manor Quay and 'Nordic Chieftain' under construction beside her (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/61775D), June 1973. These photographs were taken by the Newcastle-based firm Turners (Photography) Ltd. They celebrate the construction of the OBO (oil/bulk/ore) carrier ?Naess Crusader?, covering the early stages in January 1972 through her launch on 21 December 1972 to her completion and sea trials in July 1973. ?Naess Crusader? and her sister ship ?Nordic Chieftain? were built by Sunderland Shipbuilders Ltd at the firm?s North Sands Shipyard for Anglo Eastern Bulkships Ltd. They were the largest ships ever built on the River Wear. The memory of ?Naess Crusader? is integral to the Sunderland Keel Line, a new public artwork, opened in 2015, which celebrates the City?s shipbuilding heritage. The Keel Line is 291.7 metres long and that distance was chosen because it represents the full length of ?Naess Crusader?. This album is a reminder of Sunderland?s proud industrial heritage and a tribute to the skill and dedication of her shipyard workers.
