A painter working on a Super Structure at Joseph L Thompson & Sons Ltd

Description

Reference: DS.JLT-5-3-4 This image has been taken from the Joseph L Thompson & Sons Ltd shipbuilders? collection. The photographs, taken at the Sunderland Based Shipyard were used in the publicity campaign 'The Art of Shipbuilding' published in 1946 to promote the firms of Joseph L. Thompson & Sons Ltd and Sir James Laing & Sons Ltd. Inspired by the upcoming Grayson Perry exhibition 'The Vanity in small differences' Tyne & Wear Archives have created this set in reaction to some of the themes surrounding Sunderland and its social make up that have been explored by Grayson Perry in his six large scale tapestries. This set features both Social and Landscape Photography of a nostalgic Sunderland; these consist of both Aerial views of the physical make up of Sunderland's landscape, mixed with social portraits of the working community and industrial scenes traditionally associated with Sunderland's Heritage. Both are relevant to Grayson Perry's upcoming collection of Tapestries exploring the story of class mobility and the influence social class has on our aesthetic taste. When recently interviewed on the subject Perry states "When I asked club singer Sean Foster-Conley what I should feature in my tapestries to show working-class taste, he said ?the mines and shipyards?. ?But they no longer exist,? I replied. In a very important way, however, he was right. The heavy industries that shaped the north of England also shaped the emotional lives of the generations of people who lived there. Winding towers and cranes can be torn down in a day, but the bonds, formed through shared hardship working under them, live on." These images of a community driven by industry, mixed with Aerial Views of the physical make up of Sunderland during this time reflect on Perry's view of the eternal relevance that Sunderland's social and industrial past has on its present community. Portrait of Lenin by Yuri Annenkov, Moscow (1921)

Description

Boris Souvarine Papers - Soviet Russia Photos graduateinstitute.ch/home/research/library/archives/boris... Notes: This document is a photographic reproduction of a portrait of Lenin, made by Russian avant-garde artist Yuri (Georges) Annenkov (1889-1974) in Moscow, 1921. It is part of a small collection, gathered by Boris Souvarine, presumably consisting of a series of portraits of Bolshevik leaders drawn by this artist. As a French delegate to the IIIrd International, Boris Souvarine met several times Lenin, about whom he wrote that he was a comrade "simple, modest, friendly, attentive to others' opinions" (quoted by Jean-Louis Panné in Boris Souvarine: le premier désenchanté du communisme. Our translation). A student of Felix Vallotton in Paris (1911-1914), Yuri Annenkov was initiated to futurism and cubism. Back in Russia, he belonged to the avant-garde artists, among whom were Larionov, Malevitch, Tatline, Kandinsky. Close to the Bolsheviks, he executed portraits of the Lenin, Trotski, Stalin, Zinoviev, Radek, Gorki, etc. In 1920, he was appointed professor to the Vkhutemas (state art and technical schools) created by Lenin, and charged with the theatrical design of two mass spectacles: "The Hymn to Liberated Labour" and "The Storming of the Winter Palace". His collection of political portraits is gathered in Portraits, first published in Saint-Petersburg in 1922, and prefaced by Anatoli Lunatcharski, Soviet People's Commissar of Education responsible for culture and education. In 1924, Yuri Annenkov left Russia for Germany, then France, where he worked as a prolific theater decorator. The back of the document reads: "L'ART EN PHOTOGRAPHIE - Studio Yves Hervochon" (Paris). Portrait of Grigori Zinoviev by Yury Annenkov [s.d.]

Description

Boris Souvarine Papers - Soviet Russia Photos graduateinstitute.ch/home/research/library/archives/boris... Notes: This picture is a reproduction of a portrait made by Yury Annenkov of Grigori Zinoviev (1883-1936). Grigori Zinoviev was a Soviet Communist politician. A close friend of Lenin, with whom he shared exile in Switzerland (1903; 1908-1910; 1914-1917), he came back to Russia with Lenin in the aftermath of the February Revolution. He became head of the Communist International (1919-1926) and played a major role in the failed attempts to install communism in Germany in the early 1920s. Appointed a full member of the Politburo in 1921, he was one of the main Bolshevik leaders during Lenin?s illness and joined the troïka with Stalin and Lev Kamenev. The struggle for power led to the crumbling of the triumvirate: an opponent of Stalin?s bolshevization of sections of the Comintern, he was dismissed from the Politburo in 1926, and lost the presidency of the Comintern the same year. Following a public self-criticism, he was reinstated in the Party under Stalin?s control. He was expelled from the Party a second time in 1932, then again in 1934. He disappeared in August 1936, to reappear with Lev Kamenev at the first major public trial of the ?old Bolsheviks?. His execution marked the beginning of the Great Purge. He was married to Zlata (or Zinaida) Ionova Lilina (1881-1929), a Bolshevik involved in child care and education (see the photo entitled ?Group of delegates to the IIIrd International at Pavlovsk Palace??). To find out more about Yury Annenkov, please see the photo entitled "Portrait of Lenin by Yuri Annenkov, Moscow (1921)". To find out more about Lev Kamenev, please see the photo entitled "Portrait of Lev Kamenev by Yuri Annenkov [s.d.]". Description: 1 reproduction of picture. Black and white ; 27 x 15.5 cm. Portrait of Vladimir Antonov-Ovseenko by Yury Annenkov (1923)

Description

Boris Souvarine Papers - Soviet Russia Photos graduateinstitute.ch/home/research/library/archives/boris... Notes: This picture is a photographic reproduction of a portrait made by Yury Annenkov of Vladimir Antonov-Ovseenko (1883-1938). Vladimir Antonov-Ovseenko was a Bolshevik leader and diplomat. Initially Menshevik, he became a Bolshevik in May 1917 and led the storming of the Winter Palace in the October Revolution. As the Commander of the Red Army on the Ukrainian front during the Civil War, he supervised the operations that led to the crushing of the nationalist troops and the White Army, which entailed the creation of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. He then put down the insurrection of Tambov, Russia, probably with the use of chemical weapons (1920-1921). In 1922, he was appointed to head of the political direction of the Red Army. As a supporter of Trotsky, he was considered as an opponent by Stalin from 1924. Stalin pulled him away from central power, in spite of Antonov-Ovseenko?s rallying in 1928, and sent him on diplomatic mission in Czechoslovakia, Lithuania and Poland until 1934. The same year, Antonov-Ovseenko became the Russian SFSR's chief prosecutor, and then made special Soviet consul in Barcelona during the Spanish Civil War in 1936-1937. Appointed by Stalin People's Commissar for Justice of the Russian SFSR in September 1937, he was arrested and executed in February 1938, during the Great Purge. To find out more about Yury Annenkov, please see the photo entitled "Portrait of Lenin by Yuri Annenkov, Moscow (1921)". Description: 1 reproduction of picture. Black and white ; 22.5 x 20.5 cm.
