TALAT Lecture 3710: Case Study on Can Making

Description

This lecture gives a background of the design and manufacturing processes of food and beverage cans, which are produced by drawing and drawing & ironing of rolled aluminium alloys. It draws attention to the challenge for materials and production engineers to fulfill contradicting demands and requirements for the production of cans and easy-open lids in a very competitive market. It demonstrates that optimization of all parameters, i.e. design, manufacturing and materials, has resulted in sheet metal forming processes of extremely high productivity and reliability. A good general knowledge of engineering practice and a familiarity with sheet metal forming and properties of aluminium alloys is assumed.

TALAT Lecture 3504: Impact Extrusion Design Aspects and Properties

Description

This lecture describes the forms and shapes which can be fabricated by impact extrusion; it points out limiting factors in the freedom of design of impacts; it helps to learn about the factors affecting tolerances and surface roughness of impacts. Basic knowledge about the formability of metals and background in mechanical engineering is assumed.

Photograph, black and white, copied. Studio photograph showing a young man in army uniform standing between a young boy and girl. Man and woman seated in front. The man is wearing a three-piece suit, woman in a long dress Regional Faces of the First World War. The photograph is from an album relating to the men, women and children from Tyne and Wear who lived, worked or fought during the First World War. Accompanying this photo is the biographical and supporting information that we have about them, but the full story is not always known. Our collections records are not very detailed in some cases. We need your help to fill in the blanks. Do you have any information to add to what is already here? A name? A location? What more can you find out and tell us about their life? If you have some extra information about this photograph, please add your comments, information and any links, images or text. Part of the ?Wor Life? project. Brownies taking part in craft activities

Description

Members of the Royal Victoria School for the Blind Brownie pack, January 1962 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/28235A). Tyne & Wear Archives is proud to present a series of images relating to the Royal Victoria School for the Blind, Newcastle upon Tyne. The set has been produced to celebrate UK Disability History Month 2014. The Royal Victoria School for the Blind (then known as the Royal Victoria Asylum) was established from a fund to mark the coronation of Queen Victoria in 1837 and was originally located at the Spital before moving to premises in Northumberland Street. In the 1890s the name was changed to the Royal Victoria School, and in 1895 the school moved to the former house of Dr Hodgkinson in Benwell Dene. Pupils came from throughout the North of England. As a result of legislation to integrate special groups within the mainstream education system the school closed in 1985. A shipwright at work at Doxfords, Sunderland

Description

Tom Jones, a foreman shipwright at William Doxford & Sons (Shipbuilders) Ltd , marking out the front plate of a ship using the traditional chalked string method, 1961 (TWAM ref. DS.DOX/6/7/4/2). Sunderland has a remarkable history of innovation in shipbuilding and marine engineering. From the development of turret ships in the 1890s and the production of Doxford opposed piston engines after the First World War through to the designs for Liberty ships in the 1940s and SD14s in the 1960s. Sunderland has much to be proud of. Tyne & Wear Archives cares for tens of thousands of photographs in its shipbuilding collections. Most of these focus on the ships ? in particular their construction, launch and sea trials. This set looks to redress the balance and to celebrate the work of the men and women who have played such a vital part in the region?s history. The images show the human side of this great story, with many relating to the world famous shipbuilding and engineering firm William Doxford & Sons Ltd. The Archives has produced a short blog to accompany these images. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share these digital images within the spirit of The Commons. Usworth Brickworks

Description

View of Usworth Brickworks, May 1965 (TWAM ref. 5417/406/1). 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the creation of Washington New Town. It was officially established on 24 July 1964 and since then the area has witnessed massive changes. Old pit terraces have been replaced with modern housing, thousands of new jobs have been created, great new shopping and leisure facilities have been built and a derelict industrial landscape has been reclaimed and transformed. To celebrate this anniversary Tyne & Wear Archives has brought together a set of images of Washington as it was 50 years ago. These were commissioned by Washington Development Corporation, which was responsible for planning, designing and building the New Town. The images are an important reminder of Washington's past. They reflect how much of the town has changed beyond recognition. The town will continue to evolve over the next fifty years and we must make sure that the memories continue to be preserved.
