Brownies working together

Description

Members of the Royal Victoria School for the Blind Brownie pack, January 1962 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/28235D). Tyne & Wear Archives is proud to present a series of images relating to the Royal Victoria School for the Blind, Newcastle upon Tyne. The set has been produced to celebrate UK Disability History Month 2014. The Royal Victoria School for the Blind (then known as the Royal Victoria Asylum) was established from a fund to mark the coronation of Queen Victoria in 1837 and was originally located at the Spital before moving to premises in Northumberland Street. In the 1890s the name was changed to the Royal Victoria School, and in 1895 the school moved to the former house of Dr Hodgkinson in Benwell Dene. Pupils came from throughout the North of England. As a result of legislation to integrate special groups within the mainstream education system the school closed in 1985. Ward C1, 1st Northern General Hospital during the First World War was housed in what is now the Hatton Gallery

Description

During the First World War the building that now houses the Hatton Gallery was requisitioned to house the 1st Northern General Hospital. This was normal practice throughout the war years, as army hospitals were needed across the country and on a large scale. The Fine Art building in which you are now standing was then part of Armstrong College, Durham University. The hospital was staffed by students and staff with an association to the university, which of course included a Medical School. In 1914 the hospital had 420 beds but by 1917 this number had risen to 2,166. Over the course of the war the hospital took in at least 41,896 servicemen. Wilhelmina Fletcher, arrested for stealing

Description

Name: Wilhelmina Fletcher Arrested for: not given Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 15 August 1906 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-41-Wilhelmina Fletcher The Shields Daily News for 22 August 1906 reports: ?At North Shields Police Court today? Wilhelmina Fletcher (30), a married woman, was charged with having, between Aug.17 1905 and Aug. 14 1906, stolen a silver watch and gold albert, a silver brooch, three fancy quilts, half a dozen tea spoons, half a dozen pillow cases, three linen sheets, three blankets and other articles, valued at 6 10s, the property of Jane Robertson, a widow, living at 58 Stephenson Street. The prosecutrix said the accused and her husband had a furnished room taken from her. She missed some bedclothes and taxed the accused with having taken them and she admitted having done so. Sergt. Hall said the accused went to the police station and gave herself up. From what she said witness went to 58 Stephenson Street and ascertained from the prosecutrix that the accused statements were true. Witness recovered the property which had been pledged for 1 19s 3d. The accused said she had been short of money but she intended to redeem the goods. The Deputy Clerk (Mr A. E. Kidd) said that this was a plea of not guilty and the court would have no alternative to committing the prisoner for trial. Subsequently she pleaded guilty in order that she might be dealt with summarily and expressed her sorrow. The husband came forward and said he was somewhat irregularly employed but he had invariably been in a position to give his wife sufficient for domestic requirements. There were no children. The Chairman: ?Does your wife drink?? The husband: ?Occasionally.? The Chairman, addressing the accused, said the Bench would credit her with the fact that she had given herself up to the police and would deal leniently with her. They would commit her to prison for one month in the second division. Applications by the pawnbrokers for the refunding of the money advanced on the goods were granted in this case.? These images are a selection from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 in the collection of Tyne & Wear Archives (TWA ref DX1388/1). The Hospital on board the tanker 'Borgsten'

Description

View of the Hospital on the tanker ?Borgsten?, January 1964 (TWAM ref. DS.JLT/4/PH/1/709/7/18). She was built by J.L. Thompson & Sons Ltd, North Sands, Sunderland. This set celebrates the achievements of the famous Sunderland shipbuilding firm Joseph L. Thompson & Sons. The company?s origins date back to 1846 when the firm was known as Robert Thompson & Sons. Robert Thompson senior died in 1860, leaving his second son Joseph Lowes Thompson in control. In 1870 the shipyard completed its last wooden vessel and was then adapted for iron shipbuilding. By 1880 the firm had expanded its operations over much of North Sands and in 1884 completed the construction of Manor Quay, which served as fitting out and repair facilities. For many years in the late nineteenth century the yard was the most productive in Sunderland and in 1894 had the fourth largest output of any shipyard in the world. The Depression affected the firm severely in the early 1930s and no vessels were launched from 1931 to 1934. However, during those years the company developed a hull design giving greater efficiency and economy in service. During the Second World War the prototype developed by Joseph L. Thompson & Sons proved so popular that it was used by the US Government as the basis of over 2,700 Liberty ships built at American shipyards between 1942 and 1945. After the War the North Sands shipyard went on to build many fine cargo ships, oil tankers and bulk carriers. Sadly the shipyard closed in 1979, although it briefly reopened in 1986 to construct the crane barge ITM Challenger.
