Description

This intensive and brief 4-day seminar, taught during MIT's Independent Activities Period in January, uses a case set in Hartford, Vermont to introduce economic development planning skills to students in the Master in City Planning (MCP) Degree Program. It introduces analytical tools that are used to assess local economic development conditions, issues, and opportunities as part of formulating economic development plans. The course is designed to provide MCP students with skills needed for applied economic development planning work in other courses, particularly Economic Development Planning (11.438) and Revitalizing Urban Main Streets (11.439). Student self-evaluation and use of Mahara in supported learning programmes at Barony College

Description

Barony College has a Special Programmes course for it’s students with learning disabilities and Alison Halliday (Senior Special Programmes Co-ordinator) was present at an in-house Mahara demonstration. Alison had been using a paper based learning plan for her students for more than 5 years and had been looking for an online alternative. It was anticipated that this would provide the students with a portfolio of their work, plans and progress to take with them to reviews and to post-Barony life.

15.010 is the Sloan School's core subject in microeconomics, with sections for non-Sloan students labeled 15.011. Our objective is to give you a working knowledge of the analytical tools that bear most directly on the economic decisions firms must regularly make. We will emphasize market structure and industrial performance, including the strategic interaction of firms. We will examine the behavior of individual markets -- and the producers and consumers that sell and buy in those markets -- in some detail, focusing on cost analysis, the determinants of market demand, pricing strategy, market power, and the implications of government regulatory policies. Providing Effective Feedback

Description

The learning objectives for this lesson include, firstly, a comparison of the mechanisms for recording achievement and progress of students, identifying best practice and explaining how it could be used in your own area of teaching. Secondly, we will explain the importance of feedback to the student in order to help the student improve. Thirdly, we will compare and contrast different examples of feedback and make judgements about their value or otherwise. Finally, we will describe appropriate skills and approaches to negotiate targets and strategies for improvement and success for students.

During this lesson, we will discuss how to conduct progress reviews with learners and how to support learners to implement their action plans. We will also explore the interface of the coaching and mentoring action plans with the organisation’s individual learning plan (ILP) and other action-planning systems. Planning and Preparing for Teaching

Description

The objectives for this lesson are to identify and demonstrate relevant approaches to teaching and learning in relation to their specialist area. We will be looking at ways of embedding elements of functional skills into teaching and justifying a selection of teaching and learning approaches, including resources for a specific session. Finally, we will be planning a teaching and learning session, which meets the needs of individuals.
