This subject examines the paradoxes of contemporary globalization. Through lectures, discussions and student presentations, we will study the cultural, linguistic, social and political impact of globalization across broad international borders and on specific language communities. We will consider answers to key questions such as: What are the contending definitions of globalization? What are the principal agents of change? How have those agents of change been transformed in our contemporary world? What's new, what's hybrid, and what's traditional? What does it mean to be a world citizen? Edinburgh Napier Podcasting Project 

Description

The Edinburgh Napier Podcast Project was launched in September 2009 as a pilot project in the School of Arts and Creative Industries. Funded by a Teaching Fellowship Grant, this project aimed to improve retention by providing additional support to first year students. Each week a podcast was released to students with relevant and timely advice. Information was provided in a conversational, convenient way that could be accessed anonymously. Importantly, the podcasts were produced by students. In total, over 30 podcasts were created, covering a wide range of topics, from PDTs to mit circs and research methodology

Increasing student engagement using podcasts - Case study

Description

This case study examines the use of simple audio podcasts in a fully online distance education class, as part of the DUCKLING research project conducted by the Beyond Distance Research Alliance at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom. It discusses the benefits of using podcasts as part of an integrated online learning strategy in a distance learning context, and gives an overview of how podcasts were used to introduce concepts, provide support for assignments, and to give students direct feedback on their work.

Podcasting the Ancient World

Description

The website hosts a range of podcasts to enhance the learning experience of students. Two areas were chosen: Classical Archaeology and Egyptology. The materials were designed to support teaching in two areas. The first year (level 1) introductory module to Greek Archaeology and the second, the second and third years (combined) module (levels 2and 3) on Images of Power in the Greek and Roman Worlds. The project will help to develop students' personal reflection on material culture and archaeological sites. This site is still under development.
