?Thank you, Turners!?

Description

Ah, the joy of photography! (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/28465J). You can read a blog relating to these images here www.twmuseums.org.uk/engage/blog/turners-saved-my-marriage/. Tyne & Wear Archives is very fortunate to hold the photographic negatives of the firm Turners (Photography) Ltd. The collection contains many remarkable images commissioned by local firms during the second half of the Twentieth Century. The Turners collection also includes images taken by the firm to promote their own business and this set shows a short series of images taken in March 1962 to promote the sale of cameras in their shops. They tell the story of a bored husband, his mind numbed by television, and his worried wife. Looking for inspiration, the man passes by a Turners shop window and discovers the wonder of photography. At once his happiness returns and matrimonial harmony is restored. We?ve no record of the captions used by Turners to accompany these images so we?ve used a bit of artistic licence and created our own. Maybe you can suggest alternatives. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share these digital images within the spirit of The Commons. Please cite 'Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums' when reusing. Certain restrictions on high quality reproductions and commercial use of the original physical version apply though; if you're unsure please email archives@twmuseums.org.uk

Meanings and Functions in Olympic Consumption: A Study of the Athens 2004 Olympic Licensed Products

Description

This is an exploratory study of the meanings and functions of one aspect of Olympic consumption, the purchase of Olympic licensed products. More specifically, the present study attempted to examine the value Olympic licensed items hold for their owners by uncovering the meanings attached to those items. Using the Athens 2004 Summer Olympic Games as the setting, 280 consumers responded to questions regarding their reasons for purchasing Olympic licensed products as well as how they intended to use those products. Furthermore, an effort was made to assess what those products meant for their owners. The findings of this study point to the highly symbolic meanings embedded in the consumption of Olympic licensed products. The symbolic meanings revealed centred around three main themes: the Olym

Science promotion

Description

This unit will look at how public engagement in science and technology might be achieved through science promotion. Science promotion and public involvement in policy making can require both formal and informal objectives: some are explicit and some are implicit, some are articulated at the planning stage and some are unexpected. These objectives can entail participation, engagement, knowledge exchange and learning – all of which require a degree of motivation by all parties.

Review of Barriers to Engaging Black and Minority Ethnic Groups in Physical Activity in the United Kingdom.

Description

Conclusion: The search yielded 391 studies and 18 were finally included in the review. Our review identified 20 barriers clustered among four broad themes of: (a) perceived personal barriers; (b) socio-economic barriers; (c) cultural barriers; and (d) environmental barriers. Overcoming these barriers in these broad areas is important in development of sensitive multicultural health promotion addressing physical inequalities.

Health promotion, health education and HIV/AIDS

Description

This article will focus on the role that health promotion can play in preventing the transmission of HIV. The school setting is taken as an example and a range of effective methods and approaches focusing on young people are identified. It gives an outline of the nature of health promotion, followed by consideration of school-based efforts, which aim to protect the future generation, and a summary of some of the strategies that have been effective in this setting. Finally, issues related to health and monitoring health status are then very briefly addressed.
