Description

Name: Leonard Burdon Arrested for: False Pretences Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 1 November 1904 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-59-Leonard Burdon The Shields Daily Gazette for 1 November 1904 reports: "At North Shields, Leonard Burton, barman, South Shields was charged with obtaining food and lodging to the amount of 17s from Kate Hughes, 10 Stanley Street West, by means of false pretences. Prosecutrix said that on Sept. 23rd represented to her that he had signed a contract with the manager of the Borough Theatre for two months, and on that representation he was taken in as a lodger at 17s a week. He remained for nine days leaving on Oct. 1st. Inquiries were made at the theatre and it was found that his story was untrue. Mr Horace Lee, theatre manager, said the accused had not been employed at the borough in any capacity. PC Brown said that he arrested the accused at South Shields in a public house where he had been employed as a barman since Thursday last. The accused said that he knew he told a lie, but he intended to pay when he obtained employment. The magistrates committed him to prison for seven days in the second division". Newcastle Co-operative building, Newgate Street, 1961

Description

View of Newgate Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, May 1961 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/26647E). This street has seen significant changes since this photograph was taken with the development of Eldon Square Shopping Centre and The Gate. Tyne & Wear Archives presents a series of images taken by the Newcastle-based photographers Turners Ltd. The firm had an excellent reputation and was regularly commissioned by local businesses to take photographs of their products and their premises. Turners also sometimes took aerial and street views on their own account and many of those images have survived, giving us a fascinating glimpse of life in the North East of England in the second half of the Twentieth Century. Washington Arms and Village Green

Description

View of the Washington Arms and Village Green, May 1965 (TWAM ref. 5417/243/1). 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the creation of Washington New Town. It was officially established on 24 July 1964 and since then the area has witnessed massive changes. Old pit terraces have been replaced with modern housing, thousands of new jobs have been created, great new shopping and leisure facilities have been built and a derelict industrial landscape has been reclaimed and transformed. To celebrate this anniversary Tyne & Wear Archives has brought together a set of images of Washington as it was 50 years ago. These were commissioned by Washington Development Corporation, which was responsible for planning, designing and building the New Town. The images are an important reminder of Washington's past. They reflect how much of the town has changed beyond recognition. The town will continue to evolve over the next fifty years and we must make sure that the memories continue to be preserved. Frederick Benedict Muir

Description

This mug shot comes from a police identification book believed to be from the 1930s. It was originally found in a junk shop by a member of the public and subsequently donated to Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums. No information is available to confirm which police force compiled it but evidence suggests it's from the Newcastle upon Tyne area. This image is part of the Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums set Newcastle upon Tyne criminals of the 1930?s. Accession no. "Hookey Alf" of Whitechapel

Description

From 'Street Life in London', 1877, by John Thomson and Adolphe Smith: ?Thus in the photograph before us we have the calm undisturbed face of the skilled artisan, who has spent a life of tranquil, useful labour, and can enjoy his pipe in peace, while under him sits a woman whose painful expression seems to indicate a troubled existence, and a past which even drink cannot obliterate. By her side, a brawny, healthy "woman of the people," is not to be disturbed from her enjoyment of a "drop of beer" by domestic cares; and early acclimatizes her infant to the fumes of tobacco and alcohol. But in the fore-ground the camera has chronicled the most touching episode. A little girl, not too young, however, to ignore the fatal consequences of drink, has penetrated boldly into the group, as if about to reclaim some relation in danger, and drag him away from evil companionship. There is no sight to be seen in the streets of London more pathetic than this oft-repeated story the little child leading home a drunken parent. Well may those little faces early bear the stamp of the anxiety that destroys their youthfulness, and saddens all who have the heart to study such scenes. Inured to a life crowded with episodes of this description, the pot-boy stands in the back-ground with immoveable countenance, while at his side a well-to-do tradesman has an expression of sleek contentment, which renders him superior to the misery around.? John Grant

Description

Name: John Grant Arrested for: Larceny Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 13 February 1904 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-27-John Grant The Shields Daily Gazette for 15 February 1904 reports: "PUBLIC HOUSE THEFT Two fisherman named John Grant (31) of North Shields and John Gillan (44) of North Berwick, went into the Newcastle Arms, Union Quay, North Shields on Friday morning at half-past six. There was a glass of money standing on the counter, which one of the assistants ought to have taken upstairs the previous night but forgot to do so. When they left the bar they took the glass and the money, 1 18s 6d, with them. PC Spindler apprehended them at the Fish Quay. Neither of them denied the charge, and both were fined 10s and costs". William Glendinning, labourer, arrested for theft

Description

Name: William Glendinning Arrested for: not given Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 22 February 1915 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-258-William Glendinning The Shields Daily News for 1 March 1915 reports: ?THEFT FROM A LODGING HOUSE Today at North Shields, before Mr J. W. Munby and Mr A. B. Plummer, Wm. Glendinning (41), labourer, no fixed abode, was charged with stealing a suit of clothes and a quantity of provisions, value 1 19s 6d, the property of William Thompson, 37 Duke Street. The prosecutor said the accused and he were staying in the same lodging house. Witness missed the articles mentioned from a locker in the kitchen. He afterwards saw the accused in South Shields and gave him into custody. Evidence was given that the accused sold the suit at his second-hand shop in High Street, Gateshead, on the 13th inst. for 3s 6d. Detective Sergt. Hall stated that on the 15th inst., from a complaint made by the prosecutor, he made inquiries and found the accused had absconded from the lodging house. He afterwards received the accused into custody from the South Shields police and charged him. He replied, ?I took the suit and sold it to a second-hand dealer near the Half Moon public house in Gateshead?. Witness had not recovered the suit as it had been re-sold. Defendant pleaded that he was under the influence of drink. The Chief Constable (Mr J. H. Huish) put in 12 previous appearances against the accused before the Sunderland magistrates. The charges included gaming, brawling, stealing and false pretences. Accused was committed for a month.? These images are taken from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 (TWAM ref. DX1388/1). This set is our selection of the best mugshots taken during the First World War. They have been chosen because of the sharpness and general quality of the images. The album doesn?t record the details of each prisoner?s crimes, just their names and dates of arrest. In order to discover the stories behind the mugshots, staff from Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums visited North Shields Local Studies Library where they carefully searched through microfilm copies of the ?Shields Daily News? looking for newspaper reports of the court cases. The newspaper reports have been transcribed and added below each mugshot. Combining these two separate records gives us a fascinating insight into life on the Home Front during the First World War. These images document the lives of people of different ages and backgrounds, both civilians and soldiers. Our purpose here is not to judge them but simply to reflect the realities of their time.
