Constitutionalism, ethnicity and minority rights in Africa: a legal appraisal from the Great Lakes region

Description

Public Seminar Series, Trinity term 2013. Seminar by Dr Jeremie Gilbert (University of East London) recorded on 22 May 2013 at the Oxford Department of International Development, University of Oxford. The last decade has witnessed a constitutional revival in Africa, with several countries adopting new constitutions. Several of these constitutions have been adopted following serious ethnic tensions, especially in the Great Lakes region. Because of the nature of the ethnic conflicts which were rooted in the repression of minority communities, the new constitutional frameworks regarding ethnicity and minority rights are going to be extremely significant for the peace and stability of the region. Tracks Across Sand: the dispossession of the Khomani San of the southern Kalahari

Description

Annual Elizabeth Colson Lecture 2013. Lecture by Hugh Brody (Canada Research Chair in Aboriginal Studies, University of the Fraser Valley) recorded on 8 May 2013 at the Oxford Department of International Development, University of Oxford. The 2013 Annual Elizabeth Colson Lecture set out the history of the drastic and often violent dispossession of the peoples of the southern Kalahari. This is an area reached by the 1908 German wars of extermination against indigenous peoples, and where all the forces of colonial occupation have been brought to bear. For the San living within South Africa, the apartheid regime meant a final eviction from their last remaining lands. This meant that the Khomani became a diaspora of people without rights to land, work or even a place to live; refugees in what Wales; http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/2.0/uk/

Here, man is nothing: Gendered tensions and male failed asylum seekers

Description

Public Seminar Series, Hilary term 2013. Seminar by Melanie Griffiths (COMPAS) recorded on 6 March 2013 at the Oxford Department of International Development, University of Oxford. It has been said that refugees are approached through depoliticised and dehistoricised eyes, to which we might add 'ungendered'. This seminar considers gender as an unspoken but critical dimension of the creation and management of the category of failed asylum seeker. Drawing from qualitative research conducted with male failed asylum seekers in the UK, it explores the interplay of gender with asylum protection practices. This will include looking at mechanisms of emasculation, as well as what implications the ideological construct of the 'genuine' refugee has on how those refused protection are imagined. The discussion shed light on the types of migratory patterns that can result from complex crises; the effectiveness of migration policy tools in addressing certain aspects of crisis situations; and the ways in which mobility can be used as a positive strategy toward long-t Wales; http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/2.0/uk/

Survival migration: failed governance and the crisis of displacement

Description

Public Seminar Series, Michaelmas term 2013. Seminar by Dr Alexander Betts (University of Oxford) recorded on 16 October 2013 at the Oxford Department of International Development, University of Oxford. The talk, based on Betts new book, will explore the challenge of responding to new drivers of cross-border displacement that fall outside the existing refugee framework. Rather than beginning with particular causes of displacement, whether environmental change, food insecurity or generalized violence, it offers a human rights-based framework through which to critically consider who, in a changing world, should be entitled to cross an international border and seek asylum.
