This course is about both the design and execution of human resource management strategies. This course has two central themes: (1) How to think systematically and strategically about aspects of managing the organization's human assets, and (2) What really needs to be done to implement these policies and to achieve competitive advantage. It adopts the perspective of a general manager and addresses human resource topics (including reward systems, performance management, high-performance human resource systems, training and development, recruitment, retention, equal employment opportunity laws, work-force diversity, and union-management relationships) from a strategic perspective. Description

Problems in nuclear engineering often involve applying knowledge from many disciplines simultaneously in achieving satisfactory solutions. The course will focus on understanding the complete nuclear reactor system including the balance of plant, support systems and resulting interdependencies affecting the overall safety of the plant and regulatory oversight. Both the Seabrook and Pilgrim nuclear plant simulators will be used as part of the educational experience to provide as realistic as possible understanding of nuclear power systems short of being at the reactor. The learner journey map: a multimedia enhanced worksheet for engineering students at UWS

Description

Staff at the School of Engineering at the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) made substantial changes to their 1st year module in Engineering Mechanics, in a proactive attempt at ensuring all students on that course progress well into their 2nd year. A Learner Journey Map was created with multimedia resources designed and embedded into weekly worksheets. This case study looks at the rationale behind creating interactive worksheets and the shift in the balance of lecture time vs supported lab time, where students worked at their own pace and can re-play examples and revise difficult concepts as often as they require

Equalities data tool at Cumbernauld College

Description

All FE and HE institutions are now required to analyse learner retention and attainment performance at course level in relation to gender, age, ethnicity, and disability. This analysis should lead to review and improvement where appropriate. To assist this analysis at Cumbernauld College, a tool was designed and developed using the FES (Further Education Statistics) return, which is completed by every FE college in Scotland. Using the annual raw data collated by the Scottish Funding Council, the college’s Quality Manager in partnership with the Head of Information Systems and Technology have created a tool which is efficient, accessible and simple to use and produces reports that can be used by both management and staff alike to analyse equality data and thereby feed into the college’s http://www.rsc-scotland.org/?p=1278
