21L.701 Literary Interpretation: Literature and Urban Experience (MIT) 21L.701 Literary Interpretation: Literature and Urban Experience (MIT)

Description

Alienation, overcrowding, sensory overload, homelessness, criminality, violence, loneliness, sprawl, blight. How have the realities of city living influenced literature's formal and thematic techniques? How useful is it to think of literature as its own kind of "map" of urban space? Are cities too grand, heterogeneous, and shifting to be captured by writers? In this seminar we will seek answers to these questions in key city literature, and in theoretical works that endeavor to understand the culture of cities. Heuristic local search tutorial Heuristic local search tutorial

Description

The Problem: Real-world problems are usually (if not always) considered hard to be solved because: * Problems cannot always be represented and solved with a straightforward mathematical approach. * A lot of parameters and constraints are involved. * The number of possible solutions to a problem can be huge. * Good solutions need to be found fast * Checking every possible solution, for finding the best one, is time consuming and sometimes not even feasible. * The quality of a solution may vary according to time, thereby; more than one different solution might be required. Heuristic Search: Heuristic search refers to techniques with the aim of finding ‘good’ solutions for a very hard optimization and decision within a reasonable amount of computation time. 6.0002 Introduction to Computational Thinking and Data Science (MIT)

Description

6.0002 is the continuation of 6.0001 Introduction to Computer Science and Programming in Python and is intended for students with little or no programming experience. It aims to provide students with an understanding of the role computation can play in solving problems and to help students, regardless of their major, feel justifiably confident of their ability to write small programs that allow them to accomplish useful goals. The class uses the Python 3.5 programming language.

Description

One of the workers topping up the mixture for the production of Wright's Biscuits. Photographed by Turner's Photographic of Newcastle. Wright?s Biscuits was a well known company in South Shields, South Tyneside. Set up as a maker of biscuits, they started out by supplying their stock to ships in 1790, but after a fall in demand, Wright's turned to making more up-market biscuits. Wright's Biscuit factory closed in 1973. Turner?s was established in Newcastle upon Tyne in the early 1900s. It was originally a chemists shop but in 1938 become a photographic dealer. Turners went on to become a prominent photographic and video production company in the North East of England. They had 3 shops in Newcastle city centre, in Pink Lane, Blackett Street and Eldon Square. Turner?s photographic business closed in the 1990s Ref: TWAS:DT.TUR/2/891/a (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons.
