Description

This seminar is designed to be an experimental and hands-on approach to applied chemistry (as seen in cooking). Cooking may be the oldest and most widespread application of chemistry and recipes may be the oldest practical result of chemical research. We shall do some cooking experiments to illustrate some chemical principles, including extraction, denaturation, and phase changes. 4.696 A Global History of Architecture Writing Seminar (MIT) 4.696 A Global History of Architecture Writing Seminar (MIT)

Description

Includes audio/video content: AV special element video. This course will study the question of Global Architecture from the point of view of producing a set of lectures on that subject. The course will be run in the form of a writing seminar, except that students will be asked to prepare for the final class an hour-long lecture for an undergraduate survey course. During the semester, students will study the debates about where to locate "the global" and do some comparative analysis of various textbooks. The topic of the final lecture will be worked on during the semester. For that lecture, students will be asked to identify the themes of the survey course, and hand in the bibliography and reading list for their lecture. STS.429 Food and Power in the Twentieth Century (MIT) STS.429 Food and Power in the Twentieth Century (MIT)

Description

In this class, food serves as both the subject and the object of historical analysis. As a subject, food has been transformed over the last 100 years, largely as a result of ever more elaborate scientific and technological innovations. From a need to preserve surplus foods for leaner times grew an elaborate array of techniques – drying, freezing, canning, salting, etc – that changed not only what people ate, but how far they could/had to travel, the space in which they lived, their relations with neighbors and relatives, and most of all, their place in the economic order of things. The role of capitalism in supporting and extending food preservation and development was fundamental. As an object, food offers us a way into cultural, political, economic, and techno-scientific hist In this class, food serves as both the subject and the object of historical analysis. Sintered salt (NaCl)

Description

The interconnectivity of pores in the reticulated aluminium foam was found to be strongly dependent on the degree of sintering of the salt. The sintering occurs by a non-densifying mechanism but the necks grow progressively wider with time. Four hours provides sufficient interconnectivity for the salt to be readily washed-out.

Coarse open celled aluminium foam produced by infiltration of sintered salt (FOAM-U-LIKE)

Description

FOAM-U-LIKE (Foaming of aluminium metal using lightly interconnected kevelled elements) is a very inexpensive route for the production of coarse open celled foams. It allows a reasonable degree of control over cell size and shape, and results in relatively uniform morphology. The interconnectivity of pores can be controlled by varying the degree of sintering of the precursor. In this case, grains of 1-4mm diameter have been sintered at 600 degrees C for just 10 minutes, giving rise to lightly interconnected, angular pores. Wash out is slow, and can be improved by longer sintering which gives thicker necks between salt grains and hence more interconnection of pores in the reticulated structure.

Widening participation: the Winter Games and investment in facilities

Description

England has never been known for its majestic mountain ranges, or for its epic year-round snowfall. Nor are the British public known for their expertise in, and enthusiasm for, snow sports such as skiing, slalom, bobsleigh, skeleton or snowboarding. How then, did an English athlete manage to demonstrate a Gold-medal winning performance in the Skeleton event that claimed victory over all of the other great snow sports nations such as Austria, Switzerland, Canada and the US?
