Bessie Surtees House, Newcastle, 1958

Description

View of Bessie Surtees House, Sandhill, Newcastle upon Tyne, April 1958 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/4/976/4). Tyne & Wear Archives presents a series of images taken by the Newcastle-based photographers Turners Ltd. The firm had an excellent reputation and was regularly commissioned by local businesses to take photographs of their products and their premises. Turners also sometimes took aerial and street views on their own account and many of those images have survived, giving us a fascinating glimpse of life in the North East of England in the second half of the Twentieth Century. Inside the Doxford Engine Works Sub Assembly Shop

Description

View of the Doxford Engine Works Sub Assembly Shop, Pallion, Sunderland, August 1954 (TWAM ref. DS.DOX/6/11/9/6). Looking along the Northerly bay from East to West. Sunderland has a remarkable history of innovation in shipbuilding and marine engineering. From the development of turret ships in the 1890s and the production of Doxford opposed piston engines after the First World War through to the designs for Liberty ships in the 1940s and SD14s in the 1960s. Sunderland has much to be proud of. Tyne & Wear Archives cares for tens of thousands of photographs in its shipbuilding collections. Most of these focus on the ships ? in particular their construction, launch and sea trials. This set looks to redress the balance and to celebrate the work of the men and women who have played such a vital part in the region?s history. The images show the human side of this great story, with many relating to the world famous shipbuilding and engineering firm William Doxford & Sons Ltd. The Archives has produced a short blog to accompany these images. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share these digital images within the spirit of The Commons. Double bottoms near completion

Description

Double bottoms near completion of ?Nicola?, the first SD14 to be built by Austin & Pickersgill, 23 October 1967 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/51703B). This set celebrates the ?Nicola?, the first in a long line of standard ships designed by the Sunderland shipyard of Austin & Pickersgill Ltd. The images document her construction from October 1967 through to her completion in February 1968. The shipbuilders commissioned the Newcastle-based firm Turners (Photography) Ltd to take weekly progress shots of the ?Nicola? and these images have given us a unique view of her development. She was the first SD14 to be completed (the name stands for ?Shelter Deck 14,000 tons deadweight?) and was designed as a replacement for the surviving ?Liberty ships?, built by American yards during the Second World War. Those Liberty ships had played a vital role in the Allied victory but by the 1960s they were fast approaching the end of their working lives. The SD14 developed by Austin & Pickersgill met the demand for economic and reliable cargo ships. The simplicity of the design meant that it could be marketed by the shipbuilders at a very competitive price. It?s success is reflected by the fact that over the course of 20 years 211 ships were built to the SD14 design by Austin Pickersgill and its licensees. Sunderland can be very proud of its remarkable shipbuilding and engineering history and the SD14 is one the City?s finest achievements. Brownies working together

Description

Members of the Royal Victoria School for the Blind Brownie pack, January 1962 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/28235D). Tyne & Wear Archives is proud to present a series of images relating to the Royal Victoria School for the Blind, Newcastle upon Tyne. The set has been produced to celebrate UK Disability History Month 2014. The Royal Victoria School for the Blind (then known as the Royal Victoria Asylum) was established from a fund to mark the coronation of Queen Victoria in 1837 and was originally located at the Spital before moving to premises in Northumberland Street. In the 1890s the name was changed to the Royal Victoria School, and in 1895 the school moved to the former house of Dr Hodgkinson in Benwell Dene. Pupils came from throughout the North of England. As a result of legislation to integrate special groups within the mainstream education system the school closed in 1985. Polishing inside for inspection

Description

Polish inside the shell for inspection at the National Projectile Factory, Birtley, 14 June 1916 (TWAM ref. 1027/271). These images belong to an album of photographs taken in the National Projectile Factory, Birtley (near Gateshead) during the First World War. The photographs were taken by Sir W.G. Armstrong Whitworth & Co Ltd, who built the factory. The images date from June 1916, shortly after the factory became operational. What makes the factory (and these photographs of it) so special is that all the management and workers there were Belgian. The factory and the nearby village of Elisabethville (built to accommodate them) were like a little corner of Belgium transplanted to the North East of England. More information about the factory and the village of Elisabethville can be found in the blog, which accompanies this set. Ediswan

Description

This poster is from the Swan Collection of Tyne & Wear Museums, held at the Discovery Museum in Newcastle upon Tyne. Sir Joseph Wilson Swan was a British Physicist, Chemist and Inventor. Swan lived at Underhill, on Kells Lane North in Low Fell, Gateshead. It was here that he conducted most of his experiments in the large conservatory. His investigations in electro-chemistry led to the construction of a motor electric meter, an electric fire-damp detector, a miners' electric safety lamp. Most importantly, Swan was also a pioneer in photographic procedures such as carbon printing. It was Swan's demonstration of the light bulb at a lecture in Newcastle upon Tyne on 18 December 1878, before its later development by the American Thomas Edison that he is most famous for. Swan and Edison later collaborated in their work with the incandescent light bulb in 1883, when they founded the Edison & Swan United Electric Light Company, otherwise known as 'Ediswan.' Many items held at Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums relating to Joseph Swan offer an amazing insight in to his work as an inventor and his place in the History of Scientific progression. This set offers a small selection from these collections. This set has been produced in support of the British Science Festival 2013, held in Newcastle upon Tyne. You can find more information on the Festival here (Copyright) We're happy for you to share these digital images within the spirit of The Commons. Pipe fitting and bending at Joseph L Thompson & Sons Ltd

Description

Reference: DS.JLT-5-3-14-2 This image has been taken from the Joseph L Thompson & Sons Ltd shipbuilders? collection. The photographs, taken at the Sunderland Based Shipyard were used in the publicity campaign 'The Art of Shipbuilding' published in 1946 to promote the firms of Joseph L. Thompson & Sons Ltd and Sir James Laing & Sons Ltd. Inspired by the upcoming Grayson Perry exhibition 'The Vanity in small differences' Tyne & Wear Archives have created this set in reaction to some of the themes surrounding Sunderland and its social make up that have been explored by Grayson Perry in his six large scale tapestries. This set features both Social and Landscape Photography of a nostalgic Sunderland; these consist of both Aerial views of the physical make up of Sunderland's landscape, mixed with social portraits of the working community and industrial scenes traditionally associated with Sunderland's Heritage. Both are relevant to Grayson Perry's upcoming collection of Tapestries exploring the story of class mobility and the influence social class has on our aesthetic taste. When recently interviewed on the subject Perry states "When I asked club singer Sean Foster-Conley what I should feature in my tapestries to show working-class taste, he said ?the mines and shipyards?. ?But they no longer exist,? I replied. In a very important way, however, he was right. The heavy industries that shaped the north of England also shaped the emotional lives of the generations of people who lived there. Winding towers and cranes can be torn down in a day, but the bonds, formed through shared hardship working under them, live on." These images of a community driven by industry, mixed with Aerial Views of the physical make up of Sunderland during this time reflect on Perry's view of the eternal relevance that Sunderland's social and industrial past has on its present community.
