Eldon Square shopping centre nears completion, 1976

Description

Aerial view of Newcastle upon Tyne, showing the new Eldon Square shopping centre nearing completion, January 1976 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/4/CN8897H). Tyne & Wear Archives presents a series of colour aerial photographs of Newcastle upon Tyne. These images were captured by the Newcastle-based photographic firm Turners Ltd during the mid to late 1970s. At first glance, some of these images give the impression that the Newcastle landscape hasn't changed much in 40 years. Look more closely, though, and some of the differences between then and now will reveal themselves - see how many you can spot. Newcastle Co-operative building, Newgate Street, 1961

Description

View of Newgate Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, May 1961 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/26647E). This street has seen significant changes since this photograph was taken with the development of Eldon Square Shopping Centre and The Gate. Tyne & Wear Archives presents a series of images taken by the Newcastle-based photographers Turners Ltd. The firm had an excellent reputation and was regularly commissioned by local businesses to take photographs of their products and their premises. Turners also sometimes took aerial and street views on their own account and many of those images have survived, giving us a fascinating glimpse of life in the North East of England in the second half of the Twentieth Century. The sun reflects brightly off the new Civic Centre still under construction. Designed by Sir Basil Spence, at the core of the building are the two hollow hexagon office blocks aligned along Burden Road. The dreary Crowtree shopping centre, flats and bus station are clearly shown top left of the image.
