Eilert Tiller, Norwegian sailor, arrested for breaking and entering

Description

Name: Eilert Tiller Arrested for: not given Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 5 December 1907 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-119-Eliert Tiller For an image of his accomplice Patrick Liljebald see www.flickr.com/photos/twm_news/25657821142/in/album-72157.... The Shields Daily News for 13 December 1907 reports: ?SEAFARING MEN SENT TO PRISON. Patrick Liljebald (35), described as a ship?s steward, of Gothenburg, and Eilert Tiller (20), a Norwegian sailor, were brought up on remand charged with breaking and entering on the 5th December a shop situate on the Union Quay, and stealing therefrom a quantity of cigarettes, tobacco etc, of the value of 1 4s 2d, the property of Messrs E.H. Smith and Co. The Chief Constable (Mr J.H. Huish) withdrew this charge and preferred one of simple larceny. Evidence was given to the effect that PC Armstrong, while on duty on the Union Quay, noticed that a window of the shop mentioned had been broken, and he in consequence kept observation upon the premises. Blowing his whistle and waving his lamp about he attracted the attention of a night watchman ? Lawrence Bonholm ? who came to his assistance. Leaving the latter outside, the officer entered the premises and found the two prisoners who tried to conceal themselves. He took them into custody and had them conveyed to the police station. On being charged with breaking and entering the premises, Liljebald said he had only gone there to get a sleep, while the other prisoner made no reply. They were both sent to prison for one month with hard labour.? These images are a selection from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 in the collection of Tyne & Wear Archives (TWA ref DX1388/1). Presenting the Freedom of the City to Earl Jellicoe

Description

Presentation of the Freedom of the City of Newcastle upon Tyne to Earl Jellicoe, Admiral of the Fleet, 9 November 1925 (TWAM ref. DF.GRA/1/4). These images belong to a series of albums documenting John Grantham?s service to the City of Newcastle upon Tyne as its Sheriff 1924-1925 and its Lord Mayor 1936-1937. John Grantham was born in Blyth in 1877 and became a cinema proprietor in Newcastle. He was elected to the City Council in 1912 and became an alderman in 1932. The albums give us an interesting insight into the duties of Lord Mayor and Sheriff as well as a fascinating picture of the times. 2016 is the 800th anniversary of the creation of Newcastle's Mayoralty and Burgesses. School play

Description

Children performing in a school play at the Royal Victoria School for the Blind, Newcastle upon Tyne, 1982 (TWAM ref. E.NC18/24). Possibly a Nativity performance (is that a donkey I can see in the background?). Tyne & Wear Archives is proud to present a series of images relating to the Royal Victoria School for the Blind, Newcastle upon Tyne. The set has been produced to celebrate UK Disability History Month 2014. The Royal Victoria School for the Blind (then known as the Royal Victoria Asylum) was established from a fund to mark the coronation of Queen Victoria in 1837 and was originally located at the Spital before moving to premises in Northumberland Street. In the 1890s the name was changed to the Royal Victoria School, and in 1895 the school moved to the former house of Dr Hodgkinson in Benwell Dene. Pupils came from throughout the North of England. As a result of legislation to integrate special groups within the mainstream education system the school closed in 1985.
