TALAT Lecture 4102: Clinching

Description

This lecture describes the detailed processes of single-step and multiple-step clinching; it shows the differences of the various clinching methods concerning the amount of shearing; it illustrates the major differences in mechanical properties of clinch joints compared with resistance spot welds. General mechanical engineering background and familiarity with the subject matter covered in TALAT This lecture 4101 is assumed.

10.569 Synthesis of Polymers (MIT) 10.569 Synthesis of Polymers (MIT)

Description

Studies synthesis of polymeric materials, emphasizing interrelationships of chemical pathways, process conditions, and microarchitecture of molecules produced. Chemical pathways include traditional approaches such as anionic polymerization, radical condensation, and ring-opening polymerizations. Other techniques are discussed, including stable free radical polymerizations and atom transfer free radical polymerizations (ARTP), catalytic approaches to well-defined architectures, and polymer functionalization in bulk and at surfaces. Process conditions include bulk, solution, emulsion, suspension, gas phase, and batch vs. continuous fluidized bed. Microarchitecture includes tacticity, molecular-weight distribution, sequence distributions in copolymers, errors in chains such as branches, head- Studies synthesis of polymeric materials, emphasizing interrelationships of chemical pathways, process conditions, and microarchitecture of molecules produced. 12.950 Atmospheric and Oceanic Modeling (MIT) 12.950 Atmospheric and Oceanic Modeling (MIT)

Description

The numerical methods, formulation and parameterizations used in models of the circulation of the atmosphere and ocean will be described in detail. Widely used numerical methods will be the focus but we will also review emerging concepts and new methods. The numerics underlying a hierarchy of models will be discussed, ranging from simple GFD models to the high-end GCMs. In the context of ocean GCMs, we will describe parameterization of geostrophic eddies, mixing and the surface and bottom boundary layers. In the atmosphere, we will review parameterizations of convection and large scale condensation, the planetary boundary layer and radiative transfer. 18.327 Wavelets, Filter Banks and Applications (MIT) 18.327 Wavelets, Filter Banks and Applications (MIT)

Description

Wavelets are localized basis functions, good for representing short-time events. The coefficients at each scale are filtered and subsampled to give coefficients at the next scale. This is Mallat's pyramid algorithm for multiresolution, connecting wavelets to filter banks. Wavelets and multiscale algorithms for compression and signal/image processing are developed. Subject is project-based for engineering and scientific applications. Wavelets are localized basis functions, good for representing short-time events. Turbinia

Description

A photograph of the damaged Turbinia, taken by W. Parry in 1907. In January that year 'Turbinia' was moored at Wallsend when she was hit by the 'Crosby', a ship launched from Robert Stephenson's shipyard on the other side of the Tyne. The Crosby crashed into her with such momentum that 'Turbinia' was pushed on to the shore. However, the Marine Steam Turbine Company was able to repair her.
