A Psychic Apparition

Description

This mysterious collection of images have been discovered within the photographic collections of Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums. Reference: TWCMS -H13098-73-8 The lantern slides are from a series titled 'Psychic Photography From A New Angle' and feature eerie images of the supposedly paranormal and unknown forces caught on camera. Very little is known of the origins of this collection. The slides were designed to accompany a lecture by a Mr C.P. MacCarthy of 15 Wilkinson Street, Sheffield. Mr MacCarthy produced the images under test conditions in 1934 in front of an invited committee at 76 Clarkehouse Road, Sheffield. He states the intention was to ?demonstrate under test conditions Fake Psychic Photography? to this committee. Mr MacCarthy states his three reasons for this demonstration. 1.To prove the possibility of Fake under test conditions. 2.To show you cannot be too critical of such phenomena. 3.To indicate the increasing scope for fraud with the probability of genuine spirit photography. Mr MacCarthy further guarantees ?in the sum of five pounds, payable to any charitable institution, that no collusion exists, or has existed between myself and any other party in connection with this demonstration.? Little is currently known of the Psychic demonstration. Who sat on the invited committee? Who was Mr MacCarthy? Why was he investigating Psychic Photography? Can you help us with this information? Rita's new idea was inspired by the contents of an earlier bottle

Description

Model, Rita Fisher, posing for Turners, February 1955 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/13209R). To read a blog about Turners advertising techniques see www.twmuseums.org.uk/engage/blog/turners-saved-my-marriage/. Tyne and Wear Archives presents a set of images taken by the Newcastle-based firm Turners (Photography) Ltd. They were taken by the firm on is own account for possible use in their advertising campaigns. Turners frequently hired models to help promote their work and to encourage sales in their shops. Some of the shots are humorous or bizarre while others are quite suggestive. The images are fascinating for what they tell us about the times that produced them ? the fashions, the attitudes, the technology ? Most of the images are quirky and almost seem to invite comments. If you?d like to suggest alternative captions we?d be delighted to hear them! (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons. Elswick Works Amateur Rowing Club

Description

View of the Elswick Works Amateur Rowing Club, Newcastle upon Tyne, c1900 (TWAM ref. 1027/418). Lord Armstrong appears to be in this photograph, second from the left at the top of the stairs. ?Workshop of the World? is a phrase often used to describe Britain?s manufacturing dominance during the Nineteenth Century. It?s also a very apt description for the Elswick Works and Scotswood Works of Vickers Armstrong and its predecessor companies. These great factories, situated in Newcastle along the banks of the River Tyne, employed hundreds of thousands of men and women and built a huge variety of products for customers around the globe. The Elswick Works was established by William George Armstrong (later Lord Armstrong) in 1847 to manufacture hydraulic cranes. From these relatively humble beginnings the company diversified into many fields including shipbuilding, armaments and locomotives. By 1953 the Elswick Works covered 70 acres and extended over a mile along the River Tyne. This set of images, mostly taken from our Vickers Armstrong collection, includes fascinating views of the factories at Elswick and Scotswood, the products they produced and the people that worked there. By preserving these archives we can ensure that their legacy lives on. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons. Born to be Wild

Description

Model posing an a motor scooter, May 1963 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/4/AG2437C). Sponsor launches an Empire ship

Description

Sponsor preparing to launch the tanker ?Empire Coral? built by Sir James Laing & Sons Ltd, Sunderland, 11 February 1941 (TWAM ref. DS.LG/4/PH/3/2). Tyne & Wear Archives is proud to present a selection of images from its Sunderland shipbuilding collections. The set has been produced to celebrate Sunderland History Fair on 7 June 2014. It's a reminder of the thousands of vessels launched on the River Wear and the many outstanding achievements of Sunderland?s shipyards and their workers. These photographs reflect Sunderland?s history of innovation in shipbuilding and marine engineering from the development of turret ships in the 1890s through to the design for SD14s in the 1960s. The Sunderland shipbuilding collections are full of fascinating stories. Some of these are represented in this set, such as the ?Rondefjell?, launched in two halves on the River Wear by John Crown & Sons Ltd and then joined together on the River Tyne. The set also shows the vital part that Sunderland?s shipbuilding industry played during the First World War. William Doxford & Sons Ltd built Royal Naval destroyers such as HMS Opal, which served in the Battle of Jutland, while other yards constructed cargo ships to help keep these shores supplied. A master model maker at Joseph L Thompson & Sons Ltd

Description

A master model maker at Joseph L Thompson & Sons Ltd, 1946 (TWAM ref. DS.JLT/5/3/1). This set celebrates the achievements of the famous Sunderland shipbuilding firm Joseph L. Thompson & Sons. The company?s origins date back to 1846 when the firm was known as Robert Thompson & Sons. Robert Thompson senior died in 1860, leaving his second son Joseph Lowes Thompson in control. In 1870 the shipyard completed its last wooden vessel and was then adapted for iron shipbuilding. By 1880 the firm had expanded its operations over much of North Sands and in 1884 completed the construction of Manor Quay, which served as fitting out and repair facilities. For many years in the late nineteenth century the yard was the most productive in Sunderland and in 1894 had the fourth largest output of any shipyard in the world. The Depression affected the firm severely in the early 1930s and no vessels were launched from 1931 to 1934. However, during those years the company developed a hull design giving greater efficiency and economy in service. During the Second World War the prototype developed by Joseph L. Thompson & Sons proved so popular that it was used by the US Government as the basis of over 2,700 Liberty ships built at American shipyards between 1942 and 1945. After the War the North Sands shipyard went on to build many fine cargo ships, oil tankers and bulk carriers. Sadly the shipyard closed in 1979, although it briefly reopened in 1986 to construct the crane barge ITM Challenger. Elswick Works cricket team

Description

Elswick Works Cricket XI, 1891 (TWAM ref. 1027/377).
