Description
Photograph, sepia, portrait of the head and shoulders of a soldier, with two stripes on his right arm and a medal on his chest. First World War (?) Regional Faces of the First World War. The photograph is from an album relating to the men, women and children from Tyne and Wear who lived, worked or fought during the First World War. Accompanying this photo is the biographical and supporting information that we have about them, but the full story is not always known. Our collections records are not very detailed in some cases. We need your help to fill in the blanks. Do you have any information to add to what is already here? A name? A location? What more can you find out and tell us about their life? If you have some extra information about this photograph, please add your comments, information and any links, images or text.Subjects

Description
View of the Elswick Works Amateur Rowing Club, Newcastle upon Tyne, c1900 (TWAM ref. 1027/418). Lord Armstrong appears to be in this photograph, second from the left at the top of the stairs. ?Workshop of the World? is a phrase often used to describe Britain?s manufacturing dominance during the Nineteenth Century. It?s also a very apt description for the Elswick Works and Scotswood Works of Vickers Armstrong and its predecessor companies. These great factories, situated in Newcastle along the banks of the River Tyne, employed hundreds of thousands of men and women and built a huge variety of products for customers around the globe. The Elswick Works was established by William George Armstrong (later Lord Armstrong) in 1847 to manufacture hydraulic cranes. From these relatively humble beginnings the company diversified into many fields including shipbuilding, armaments and locomotives. By 1953 the Elswick Works covered 70 acres and extended over a mile along the River Tyne. This set of images, mostly taken from our Vickers Armstrong collection, includes fascinating views of the factories at Elswick and Scotswood, the products they produced and the people that worked there. By preserving these archives we can ensure that their legacy lives on. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons. Polishers at work inside a Joiners' shop, probably that of Sir James Laing & Sons, shipbuilders of Sunderland, January 1948 (TWAM ref. DS.JLT/5/4/2/4). Sunderland has a remarkable history of innovation in shipbuilding and marine engineering. From the development of turret ships in the 1890s and the production of Doxford opposed piston engines after the First World War through to the designs for Liberty ships in the 1940s and SD14s in the 1960s. Sunderland has much to be proud of. Tyne & Wear Archives cares for tens of thousands of photographs in its shipbuilding collections. Most of these focus on the ships ? in particular their construction, launch and sea trials. This set looks to redress the balance and to celebrate the work of the men and women who have played such a vital part in the region?s history. The images show the human side of this great story, with many relating to the world famous shipbuilding and engineering firm William Doxford & Sons Ltd. The Archives has produced a short blog to accompany these images. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share these digital images within the spirit of The Commons. Ah, the joy of photography! (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/28465J). You can read a blog relating to these images here www.twmuseums.org.uk/engage/blog/turners-saved-my-marriage/. Tyne & Wear Archives is very fortunate to hold the photographic negatives of the firm Turners (Photography) Ltd. The collection contains many remarkable images commissioned by local firms during the second half of the Twentieth Century. The Turners collection also includes images taken by the firm to promote their own business and this set shows a short series of images taken in March 1962 to promote the sale of cameras in their shops. They tell the story of a bored husband, his mind numbed by television, and his worried wife. Looking for inspiration, the man passes by a Turners shop window and discovers the wonder of photography. At once his happiness returns and matrimonial harmony is restored. We?ve no record of the captions used by Turners to accompany these images so we?ve used a bit of artistic licence and created our own. Maybe you can suggest alternatives. Description
Children riding on the miniature railway at South Shields Amusement Park, August 1950 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/5197L). This photograph is part of a set that has been created to celebrate the opening of South Tyneside Council?s new leisure centre, Haven Point, on 28 October. It focuses in particular on life along the foreshore at South Shields during the 1950s but also includes a few images from further down the coast. South Shields has long been a popular seaside resort and also has a proud industrial heritage. Times have changed, though, and many of the old industries such as shipbuilding and coal mining have disappeared. Rather than stand still and accept this change in fortunes, South Tyneside Council is pressing ahead with an ambitious vision to transform the Foreshore, Town Centre and Riverside areas into vibrant destinations. Haven Point is a key part of this change. Tyne & Wear Archives and South Tyneside Local Studies Library have a vital role to play in this. As South Shields is regenerated and forever changed the Archives and Local Studies serve as its memory. We keep alive a window into the town?s past, preserving the history of people, places and industries that no longer exist. South Shields must look forward but its sense of direction will be lost if it forgets where it came from. These images, together with a fantastic selection from South Tyneside Local Studies Library, can be seen in a digital exhibition at Haven Point.
