The Olympic Programme - (TOPS)

Description

The acronym ‘TOP’ stands for ‘The Olympic Programme’. TOP, created in 1985, was established to maximise opportunities for generation of sponsorship revenue for the IOC, whilst at the same time reducing the substantial number of major corporate sponsors that had previously been involved with the Games to approximately seventy participating organisations. Sochi 2014: Politicisation of European Sport

Description

South Ossetia has been in conflict with the state of Georgia since just before the dissolution of the Soviet Union in the early 1990’s. The dispute is essentially based on South Ossetia’s wish for independence; a wish supported by The Russian Federation. Despite great tension and armed conflict between Georgia and Sochi, Russia still managed to emerge victorious in the competition to win the right to host the Sochi 2014 Winter Games

Credit crunch and the Games

Description

Can sports mega-events such as London 2012 survive global economic downturns? The economic crisis of 2008 affected the entire nation on both a macro and micro economic level. Kicked off by the sub-prime mortgage crisis of 2008, the global meltdown witnessed major financial institutions such as Lehman Brothers and Northern Rock break apart, dragging down global markets with them

Non-London Olympic venues

Description

The London 2012 bid has met with criticism for its perceived London-centric nature. Many people are not aware that the Games will involve the use of many sites outside of London, meaning that many non-London towns and cities will benefit from the economic, social and financial legacy of the Games. Paralympic Sport: are we equal yet?

Description

This case study considers equality for able-bodied athletes, and athletes/persons with a disability, from a financial point of view. A brief history of the Paralympic Games is presented, before asking readers to consider the differences in funding between a) Olympic and Paralympic sports in general, b) the same sport that is awarded less funding at Paralympic level than at Olympic level, and c) individual Paralympic sports. In order to consider these financial issues, brief contextualisation of the history of the Paralympic Games is necessary
