Experiments in this class are broadly aimed at acquainting students with the range of properties of polymers, methods of synthesis, and physical chemistry. Some examples of laboratory work include solution polymerization of acrylamide, bead polymerization of divinylbenzene, and interfacial polymerization of nylon 6,10. Evaluation of networks by tensile and swelling experiments, rheology of polymer solutions and suspensions, and physical properties of natural and silicone rubber are also covered. Cavity formation in a tensile loaded alumina particulate composite

Description

Horizontal stringers of fine oxide particles can be seen, parallel to the extrusion direction (horizontal). Under the tensile load, voids have nucleated at the interface between the matrix and the reinforcement particles, and some particle fracture has also occurred. Most voids form on planar faces normal to the tensile load (horizontal), and particularly where stringers of fine oxide particles also intersect the interface. These stringers provide interfacial flaws which may then be preferential sites for cavity nucleation.

The neutral axis is clearly visible, up the centre of the image, with a region of ragged fibres indicating tensile failure to the left, and a smother, apparently crushed surface to the right where the beam was in compression. The holes and proud fibres in the tensile region are indicative of fibre pull-out which is a toughening mechanism in fibre composites.
