Description

This course focuses on alternative ways in which the issues of growth, restructuring, innovation, knowledge, learning, and accounting and measurements can be examined, covering both industrialized and emerging countries. We give special emphasis to recent transformations in regional economies throughout the world and to the implications these changes have for the theories and research methods used in spatial economic analyses. Readings will relate mainly to the United States, but we cover pertinent material on foreign countries in lectures. Description

An old saying holds that "there are many more good ideas in the world than good ideas implemented." This is a case based introduction to the fundamentals of effective implementation. Developed with the needs and interests of planners—but also with broad potential application—in mind, this course is a fast paced, case driven introduction to developing strategy for organizations and projects, managing operations, recruiting and developing talent, taking calculated risks, measuring results (performance), and leading adaptive change, for example where new mental models and habits are required but also challenging to promote. Description

This seminar-style class will focus on evaluating and recommending alternative commuter and business-related transportation policies for the MIT campus. Emphasis will be placed on reducing transportation-related energy usage in a sustainable manner in response to President Hockfield's "Walk the Talk" energy initiative. Students will explore the relative roles of MIT and the MBTA as transportation providers, as well as the efficiency and effectiveness of related subsidy policies currently in place for all modes of transportation. The escalators are 200ft (61 metres) long and are believed to be the longest wooden-step escalators in Europe. An Alternative Model in the 1940's

Description

This photograph captures an Alternative Model in Newcastle, taken on the 22nd of January 1949. The collection is undeniably ahead of its time, the photographs are of an unusually dark and suggestive nature. Nothing is known of their purpose or the model in the photographs; they are simply referred to as ?Mr Steinberg?s Model.? The collection raises strong questions of an unknown Newcastle. Their dark and seductive content is suggestive of an underground and alternative scene with tones of theatrics and burlesque. This is a collection of photographs found in the Turners Collection at Tyne & Wear Archives. Turners Photography Ltd was a commercial photographic company based at 7-15 Pink Lane, Newcastle. The Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels were opened to the people of Tyneside on 24th July 1951. These two purpose-built tunnels were designed to connect Howdon in North Tyneside with Jarrow in South Tyneside under the river Tyne. At a cost of £833,000, these 900 ft (274.5 m) long tunnels, which run parallel to each other, have been connecting the communities on the North and South banks of the river Tyne for the past 60 years. The boundary between Northumberland and County Durham was under the river. The Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels were opened to the people of Tyneside on 24th July 1951. Metro rail gang test track

Description

This is a photograph takes from inside the Rail gang Test Track; it was taken some time in 1975. The photograph is taken from a collection of black and white contact prints documenting the development of the whole of the Metro System in Tyne and Wear. The images are taken from the Mott, Hay and Anderson Collection, consulting civil engineers responsible for the Tyneside Metro light rail system and the Tyne pedestrian, cyclist and vehicular tunnels. Most of the photographs were taken by Amber Film Associates and Lambton Visual Aids, 5 and 9 The Side, Newcastle. Reference no. DT.MHA/22/2/A35/8 This image inspired ?Interchange?, an experimental film and album of music by Warm Digits. Man cages manufactured by Vickers Armstrong

Description

View of man cages manufactured at the Elswick Works, Newcastle upon Tyne, April 1936 (TWAM ref. 1027/5178). ?Workshop of the World? is a phrase often used to describe Britain?s manufacturing dominance during the Nineteenth Century. It?s also a very apt description for the Elswick Works and Scotswood Works of Vickers Armstrong and its predecessor companies. These great factories, situated in Newcastle along the banks of the River Tyne, employed hundreds of thousands of men and women and built a huge variety of products for customers around the globe. The Elswick Works was established by William George Armstrong (later Lord Armstrong) in 1847 to manufacture hydraulic cranes. From these relatively humble beginnings the company diversified into many fields including shipbuilding, armaments and locomotives. By 1953 the Elswick Works covered 70 acres and extended over a mile along the River Tyne. This set of images, mostly taken from our Vickers Armstrong collection, includes fascinating views of the factories at Elswick and Scotswood, the products they produced and the people that worked there.
