Vertebrate Diversity

Description

This resource contains a series of information pages broadly outlining the diversity of living vertebrates, with a few notes on their fossil relatives, and includes images of specimens held at UCL’s Grant Museum of zoology. A wide range of vertebrates are covered - from jawless vertebrates, sharks, and ray-finned fishes, to amphibians, reptiles, and mammals. Vertebrate Palaeontology and Evolution

Description

This resource is designed to familiarise you with the diversity and evolutionary history of vertebrates through analysing images of specimens held at UCL’s Grant Museum of Zoology. It contains seven chapters: an introduction to vertebrate diversity, Fishes, the fish-tetrapod transition, Amphibians and Amniotes, Lepidosaurs and Chelonians, Archosaurs, and Birds and flight. All images have accompanying text, including information about the specimen plus hints about what to look for and the questions to consider when analysing the images. Invertebrate sampling

Description

A case study (based on a module at the University of Reading) demonstrating the construction and testing of a hypothesis. The study looks at the observation that there has been a steady decline in farm birds and poses the hypothesis that this is due to a reduction in their food (i.e. invertebrates). The example shows how to design a suitable study to generate enough data to test the hypothesis and uses more complicated statistics than the woodland survey tool also available on this web page.
