Description
The boundary between Northumberland and County Durham was under the river. The Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels were opened to the people of Tyneside on 24th July 1951. These two purpose-built tunnels were designed to connect Howdon in North Tyneside with Jarrow in South Tyneside under the river Tyne. At a cost of £833,000, these 900 ft (274.5 m) long tunnels, which run parallel to each other, have been connecting the communities on the North and South banks of the river Tyne for the past 60 years. Description
View of the OBO carrier 'Naess Crusader' under construction at the North Sands shipyard, Sunderland, 14 August 1972 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/60383A). Progress was much more advanced on the stern than on the bow. These photographs were taken by the Newcastle-based firm Turners (Photography) Ltd. They celebrate the construction of the OBO (oil/bulk/ore) carrier ?Naess Crusader?, covering the early stages in January 1972 through her launch on 21 December 1972 to her completion and sea trials in July 1973. ?Naess Crusader? and her sister ship ?Nordic Chieftain? were built by Sunderland Shipbuilders Ltd at the firm?s North Sands Shipyard for Anglo Eastern Bulkships Ltd. They were the largest ships ever built on the River Wear. The memory of ?Naess Crusader? is integral to the Sunderland Keel Line, a new public artwork, opened in 2015, which celebrates the City?s shipbuilding heritage. The Keel Line is 291.7 metres long and that distance was chosen because it represents the full length of ?Naess Crusader?. This album is a reminder of Sunderland?s proud industrial heritage and a tribute to the skill and dedication of her shipyard workers. Description
View of HMS Comus alongside Swan Hunter & Wigham Richardson shipyard, seen from south side of River Tyne, c1915 (TWAM ref. DS.SWH/5/3/4/2/B187). HMS Comus was launched on 16 December 1914 at the Wallsend Yard of Swan Hunter & Wigham Richardson. She was a C-class light cruiser and took part in the Battle of Jutland. The Rivers Tyne and Wear were responsible for building many vessels, which served Britain during the First World War. This set remembers some of those warships that took part in the Battle of Jutland from 31 May to 1 June 1916. During the battle over 6,000 British sailors lost their lives and 14 Royal Naval vessels were sunk. The losses included the battlecruisers HMS Queen Mary and HMS Invincible, as well as the destroyers HMS Shark, HMS Sparrowhawk and HMS Turbulent, all built on Tyneside. Their memory lives on.
