Destroyers moored at Hawthorn Leslie shipyard, Hebburn

Description

HMS Marksman, HMS Talisman and HMS Termagant moored at the Hawthorn Leslie shipyard, Hebburn, 5 November 1915 (TWAM ref. 4471/3). HMS Termagant took part in the Battle of Jutland with the Royal Navy's 13th Destroyer Flotilla. The shipyard of R. & W. Hawthorn Leslie at Hebburn built many fine warships. During the First World War the firm built 2 light cruisers, 3 destroyer leaders and 25 torpedo boat destroyers. The firm also built machinery and boilers for 2 battleships, and a further 3 light cruisers. These and other warships built by Hawthorn Leslie before the War, are remembered in this set. There are remarkable images of warships under construction at Hebburn, as well as fascinating shots of the people who attended the launches. The set also contains majestic views of the ships at sea. The images are not only a testimony to the skill of those who designed and built these ships but also to the courage of those who sailed in them. HMS Champion in dry dock

Description

HMS Champion in dry dock at the Hawthorn Leslie shipyard, Hebburn, 5 June 1915 (TWAM ref. 4471/3). HMS Champion was a C-class light cruiser and one of the first vessels of the Light Cruiser Squadron in action at the Battle of Jutland. The Rivers Tyne and Wear were responsible for building many vessels, which served Britain during the First World War. This set remembers some of those warships that took part in the Battle of Jutland from 31 May to 1 June 1916. During the battle over 6,000 British sailors lost their lives and 14 Royal Naval vessels were sunk. The losses included the battlecruisers HMS Queen Mary and HMS Invincible, as well as the destroyers HMS Shark, HMS Sparrowhawk and HMS Turbulent, all built on Tyneside. Their memory lives on.
