A Psychic Apparition

Description

This mysterious collection of images have been discovered within the photographic collections of Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums. Reference: TWCMS -H13098-73-8 The lantern slides are from a series titled 'Psychic Photography From A New Angle' and feature eerie images of the supposedly paranormal and unknown forces caught on camera. Very little is known of the origins of this collection. The slides were designed to accompany a lecture by a Mr C.P. MacCarthy of 15 Wilkinson Street, Sheffield. Mr MacCarthy produced the images under test conditions in 1934 in front of an invited committee at 76 Clarkehouse Road, Sheffield. He states the intention was to ?demonstrate under test conditions Fake Psychic Photography? to this committee. Mr MacCarthy states his three reasons for this demonstration. 1.To prove the possibility of Fake under test conditions. 2.To show you cannot be too critical of such phenomena. 3.To indicate the increasing scope for fraud with the probability of genuine spirit photography. Mr MacCarthy further guarantees ?in the sum of five pounds, payable to any charitable institution, that no collusion exists, or has existed between myself and any other party in connection with this demonstration.? Little is currently known of the Psychic demonstration. Who sat on the invited committee? Who was Mr MacCarthy? Why was he investigating Psychic Photography? Can you help us with this information? (Copyright) We're happy for you to share these digital images within the spirit of The Commons. Please cite 'Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums' when reusing. Certain restrictions on high quality reproductions and commercial use of the original physical version apply though; if you're unsure please email archives@twmuseums.org.uk

A master model maker at Joseph L Thompson & Sons Ltd

Description

A master model maker at Joseph L Thompson & Sons Ltd, 1946 (TWAM ref. DS.JLT/5/3/1). This set celebrates the achievements of the famous Sunderland shipbuilding firm Joseph L. Thompson & Sons. The company?s origins date back to 1846 when the firm was known as Robert Thompson & Sons. Robert Thompson senior died in 1860, leaving his second son Joseph Lowes Thompson in control. In 1870 the shipyard completed its last wooden vessel and was then adapted for iron shipbuilding. By 1880 the firm had expanded its operations over much of North Sands and in 1884 completed the construction of Manor Quay, which served as fitting out and repair facilities. For many years in the late nineteenth century the yard was the most productive in Sunderland and in 1894 had the fourth largest output of any shipyard in the world. The Depression affected the firm severely in the early 1930s and no vessels were launched from 1931 to 1934. However, during those years the company developed a hull design giving greater efficiency and economy in service. During the Second World War the prototype developed by Joseph L. Thompson & Sons proved so popular that it was used by the US Government as the basis of over 2,700 Liberty ships built at American shipyards between 1942 and 1945. After the War the North Sands shipyard went on to build many fine cargo ships, oil tankers and bulk carriers. Sadly the shipyard closed in 1979, although it briefly reopened in 1986 to construct the crane barge ITM Challenger. Discharging chromite at the Corporation Quay, Sunderland

Description

Discharging East African chromite from an ocean liner at the Corporation Quay, Sunderland, July 1949 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/3177H). This set of images celebrates the 300th Anniversary of the establishment of the Port of Sunderland. The port authority was constituted in 1717 by Act of Parliament, which appointed the River Wear Commissioners to manage and improve the harbour and river. Since then the port has changed beyond recognition with the construction of piers, docks and quays and the dredging of the River Wear to make it wider and deeper. These developments were vital to the coal trade on which the region?s prosperity depended. The improvement of the river was also essential to the success of shipbuilding in Sunderland as well as allied industries such as marine engineering and ship repairing. These images are a reflection of Sunderland?s proud industrial history. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share these digital images within the spirit of The Commons. Elizabeth Dawson, dressmaker, arrested for pawning customers' skirts

Description

Name: Elizabeth Dawson Arrested for: not given Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 20 June 1907 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-45-Elizabeth Dawson The Shields Daily News for 21 June 1907 reports: ?A DRESSMAKER?S DOWNFALL. At the North Shields Police Court today Elizabeth Dawson (52), described as a widow, of Sidney Street, was charged with being the bailee of two skirts, the property of Mrs Harrison of Bamborough Terrace and Mrs Dickinson of Whitley, and did convert them to her own use. It was explained in evidence that Mrs Harrison and Mrs Dickinson gave the accused, who is a dressmaker, the two skirts to alter. Instead of doing this, she pledged them at Messrs Findlay Mitchell and Co.?s pawnshop in Church Street. She told the assistant at that place of business that the skirts were her own property, and she being an old customer, he believed her statement and took them in, advancing 2s 6d upon each. Accused said that she was forced to do as she had because her landlady was pressing her for payment. The Bench gave her another chance, just binding her over to be of good behaviour for six months in the sum of 1. They thought drink had been the cause of her downfall and advised her to sign the pledge. She undertook to do so.? Sadly this wasn?t to be her last brush with the law. The Shields Daily News for 2 November 1907 reports: ?Elizabeth Dawson (52), widow, 11 Sidney Street, drunk and incapable in Church Way; 5s and costs.? Jimmy Forsyth

Description

Jimmy Forsyth, photographer, 1913-2009. Jimmy Forsyth was born in Barry, South Wales on 15 August 1913, the son of John and Bertha Forsyth. On leaving school at 14 he became an apprentice fitter in a cement works repair shop, but later joined the merchant navy. He returned to Wales in 1938 to work for ICI at Hirwaun. He moved to Newcastle as a munitions volunteer in 1943 and found a room in Elswick, just off the Scotswood Road, working for ICI at Prudhoe. Just four days after starting work a metal splinter blinded him in one eye, but he continued to work at ICI in other capacities until 1946, when he was sacked. Following this he took various odd jobs, including running a general store for a while. Some time in the 1950s he acquired a camera and began recording the area he lived in. He continued to take photographs until only a short while before his death. In the late 1970s his black and white negatives were acquired for preservation by Benwell Library, and in 1979 the first exhibition of Jimmy's work was held at the Side Gallery in Newcastle. The publication of Scotswood Road by Bloodaxe Books in 1986, accompanied by another exhibition at the Side, and followed by a Tyne Tees Television documentary No Fancy Shades brought his work to a wider audience. He was awarded the Halina Award for photography in 1987 and an Open University Master's degree in 2002.
