Professional relationships with young people Professional relationships with young people
Description
In some people's eyes the development of relationships is a good end in itself, as it is in relationships that we express our humanity. Young people with few good-quality relationships in their lives often find that entering into informal relationships with adults who respect, accept, like and really listen to them is a new life experience. These relationships can offer the young people new perspectives on approaching, developing and managing quality relationships of their own. This free course, Professional relationships with young people, explores different approaches in developing relationships and working practices which can inform work with young people. This is a photograph of three young men working on a computer of the time at some point in the 1970's. The photograph was taken in Washington, UK. Reference: 5417/353/4 This collection of images has been assembled in support of the Washington Heritage Festival 2013. The celebration of Washington brings together a variety of different themes. Washington is a Town in the City of Sunderland, Tyne & Wear. It is traditionally associated with Coal Industry, and notably known as the home of the Washington Family, ancestors of the First President of the United States George Washington. However, in 1964 Washington was designated a New Town and drastically changed. With the introduction of new industry such as the Nissan Car Factory Washington experienced a huge redevelopment in both its economy and community. These Photographs are taken from the Records of the Washington Development Corporation; held at Tyne & Wear Archives. The records document this change in industry, landscape and community in Washington between 1964 & 1988, and consist of many photographs. For more information on the Washington Heritage Festival, 21st September 2013 please click here. (Copyright) These images are Crown Copyright. Description
This free course, The range of work with young people, identifies some features that we might use to describe the various settings where work with young people takes place. This encourages us to identify similarities and differences between settings. It then introduces some theoretical perspectives to help us review these settings and thus understand more about the experience for young people and workers. Finally, it uses these perspectives to analyse examples of different settings, relating the theoretical ideas to the realities of practice. Description
This free course, Issues in research with children and young people, considers the aims and range of research with children and young people. Students consider how their own views and understandings about childhood and youth have arisen. Different definitions of research are explored through first-hand accounts by researchers across a range of disciplines and studies, from the small-scale to international studies studying children's lives across several countries. Attention is drawn to the role of both researchers and participants, raising issues about how children and young people can be directly involved in the research process.
