Rapid solidification in an atomised droplet

Description

Because of the fine scale of the droplet, heat extraction is very rapid, and large undercoolings are achieved before crystal nucleation can begin. Thus, in this droplet, the solidification front has advanced very rapidly through the droplet from the nucleation point (on the surface at the left of the image). Its velocity is initially so great that no interfacial breakdown is possible. As the front advances, however, latent heat is evolved and this 'recalescence' reduces the rate of solidification to a point where interfacial breakdown is possible and a cellular structure is observed in the last region to solidify (at the right hand side of the image).

Recrystallisation in a PET bottle upon heating

Description

Heating a PET bottle over a bunsen burner flame. Before heating the plastic is in a less crystalline state than would be expected, as a result of the production process. Upon heating it recrystallises into a denser form, and therefore shrinks. (Related topic - Recycling polymers)

Stretching a polyethylene strip upon heating

Description

A strip of UHMW PE is heated and gradually stretched over 180 °C (the melting temperature of PE), the polymer chains coil up again causing the film to shrink. Again heating to 120-136 °C an attempt will be made to stretch it. (Related topic: polymers)

Changes in microstructure of a shape memory alloy (bi-crystal of austenitic CuAlNi )

Description

Changes in microstructure of a shape memory alloy being heat treated and also mechanically deformed. A bi-crystal of austenitic CuAlNi is cooled, causing transformation to the martensitic (2H orthorhombic) phase. The process is reversed in the second half of the video, as the specimen is heated again. The rate at which transformation occurs is controlled by heat flow effects. (The shear process itself tends to take place very rapidly.) The martensitic phase is internally twinned. This is very clear within the dark-coloured phase moving in from the left-hand side in the first part of this video. From TLP: Microstructural Changes.
