Changes in microstructure of a shape memory alloy (bi-crystal of austenitic CuAlNi )
Description
Changes in microstructure of a shape memory alloy being heat treated and also mechanically deformed. A bi-crystal of austenitic CuAlNi is cooled, causing transformation to the martensitic (2H orthorhombic) phase. The process is reversed in the second half of the video, as the specimen is heated again. The rate at which transformation occurs is controlled by heat flow effects. (The shear process itself tends to take place very rapidly.) The martensitic phase is internally twinned. This is very clear within the dark-coloured phase moving in from the left-hand side in the first part of this video. From TLP: Microstructural Changes. Video was kindly donated by Vaclav Novak and Petr Sittner, Department of Functional Materials Institute of Physics of the ASCR, Prague, Czech RepublicSubjects

See all metadataPortrait of Lenin by Yuri Annenkov, Moscow (1921)
Description
Boris Souvarine Papers - Soviet Russia Photos graduateinstitute.ch/home/research/library/archives/boris... Notes: This document is a photographic reproduction of a portrait of Lenin, made by Russian avant-garde artist Yuri (Georges) Annenkov (1889-1974) in Moscow, 1921. It is part of a small collection, gathered by Boris Souvarine, presumably consisting of a series of portraits of Bolshevik leaders drawn by this artist. As a French delegate to the IIIrd International, Boris Souvarine met several times Lenin, about whom he wrote that he was a comrade "simple, modest, friendly, attentive to others' opinions" (quoted by Jean-Louis Panné in Boris Souvarine: le premier désenchanté du communisme. Our translation). A student of Felix Vallotton in Paris (1911-1914), Yuri Annenkov was initiated to futurism and cubism. Back in Russia, he belonged to the avant-garde artists, among whom were Larionov, Malevitch, Tatline, Kandinsky. Close to the Bolsheviks, he executed portraits of the Lenin, Trotski, Stalin, Zinoviev, Radek, Gorki, etc. In 1920, he was appointed professor to the Vkhutemas (state art and technical schools) created by Lenin, and charged with the theatrical design of two mass spectacles: "The Hymn to Liberated Labour" and "The Storming of the Winter Palace". His collection of political portraits is gathered in Portraits, first published in Saint-Petersburg in 1922, and prefaced by Anatoli Lunatcharski, Soviet People's Commissar of Education responsible for culture and education. In 1924, Yuri Annenkov left Russia for Germany, then France, where he worked as a prolific theater decorator. The back of the document reads: "L'ART EN PHOTOGRAPHIE - Studio Yves Hervochon" (Paris). See all metadataAn apprentice heating rivets at J.L. Thompson & Sons Ltd
Description
View of an apprentice heating rivets at the North Sands shipyard of J.L. Thompson & Sons Ltd, Sunderland, 1946, (TWAM ref. DS.JLT/5/3/16). This set celebrates the achievements of the famous Sunderland shipbuilding firm Joseph L. Thompson & Sons. The company?s origins date back to 1846 when the firm was known as Robert Thompson & Sons. Robert Thompson senior died in 1860, leaving his second son Joseph Lowes Thompson in control. In 1870 the shipyard completed its last wooden vessel and was then adapted for iron shipbuilding. By 1880 the firm had expanded its operations over much of North Sands and in 1884 completed the construction of Manor Quay, which served as fitting out and repair facilities. For many years in the late nineteenth century the yard was the most productive in Sunderland and in 1894 had the fourth largest output of any shipyard in the world. The Depression affected the firm severely in the early 1930s and no vessels were launched from 1931 to 1934. However, during those years the company developed a hull design giving greater efficiency and economy in service. During the Second World War the prototype developed by Joseph L. Thompson & Sons proved so popular that it was used by the US Government as the basis of over 2,700 Liberty ships built at American shipyards between 1942 and 1945. After the War the North Sands shipyard went on to build many fine cargo ships, oil tankers and bulk carriers. Sadly the shipyard closed in 1979, although it briefly reopened in 1986 to construct the crane barge ITM Challenger. Description
Name: Margaret A O'Brien Arrested for: Larceny Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 6 August 1904 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-35-Margaret O Brien The Shields Daily Gazette for 6 August 1904 reports: ?Margaret Ann O?Brien (14), 1 Queen?s Terrace, North Shields, was charged with attempting to obtain the sum of £1 from Messrs Irvin & Sons, with intent to cheat and defraud them, on the 5th August. Remanded for eight days?. The Shields Daily Gazette for 13 August 1904 reports: ?NORTH SHIELDS GIRL SENT TO GAOL At North Shields to-day, Margaret A. O?Brien (14), 1 Queen?s Terrace, North Shields, was charged on remand with unlawfully attempting to obtain from John Thos. Hewitt the sum of £1, the money of Messrs Irvin and Sons, fishing boat owners, with intent to cheat and defraud. She was further charged with obtaining £1 on another date from the same firm. In the first case Mr Hewitt stated that the girl came to the office of his employer on the 5th inst., and said she had been sent by Mrs Davies, the wife of an engineer serving on one of their boats, the Langley castle, and asked for a sovereign. As she had twice previously been at the office for money, supposed to be for Mrs Davies, but which she had never received, witness detained her and sent for the police. Elizabeth Ellen Davies, wife of George Davies, stated her husband was employed by Messrs Irvin and Sons. She had never sent the accused to receive any money at the office. She had only seen her once before and only knew her by sight. Detective-Sergt. Scougal spoke to being called to Messrs Irvin and Sons? office on the Fish Quay and finding the accused detained there. He charged her with attempting to obtain £1 by means of false pretences and she admitted the offence. At first she told him that her sister sent her, but subsequently she said she had gone on her own initiative. On the second charge it was stated in evidence that the accused went to the office on the 29th ult. and asked for£1 for Mrs Davies. This was given to her and she signed the receipt as Lily Muir. Detective Scougal said when charged with the second offence she stated that a man of the name of Cook had sent her and had given her a share of the money. Her story, however, could not be verified. The accused, who was crying bitterly, admitted the theft in both cases. The Chairman (Mr F.R.N. Haswell) said the magistrates had been very much puzzled to know what to do with the accused, as she did not seem to have an idea of what theft was. He added that they were going to inflict a punishment upon her which it was hoped would have the effect of reclaiming her from the career in which she had started. He committed her to prison for seven days on each charge. There were two other cases of the same character against her, but one was withdrawn and other was not gone into". These images are a selection from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 in the collection of Tyne & Wear Archives (TWA ref DX1388/1). This set contains mugshots of boys and girls under the age of 21. This reflects the fact that until 1970 that was the legal age of majority in the UK. See all metadataNot Shakespeare: Elizabethan and Jacobean Popular Theatre
Description
This series of six lectures introduces six plays from the Elizabethan and Jacobean theatre. Once popular and now little-known, they can tell us a lot about what their first audiences enjoyed, aspired to and worried about - from immigrants in early modern London to the role of women in the household, from what religious changes might mean for attitudes to the dead to fantasies of easy money and social elevation. Each lecture outlines the play so there is no assumption you have already read it, then goes on to try to understand its historical context and its dramatic legacy, drawing parallels with modern film and contemporary culture as well as with Elizabethan material. The lecturer's aim with students in the room and with interested listeners on iTunes U is to broaden our understanding ofSubjects
