Name: Leonard Burdon Arrested for: False Pretences Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 1 November 1904 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-59-Leonard Burdon The Shields Daily Gazette for 1 November 1904 reports: "At North Shields, Leonard Burton, barman, South Shields was charged with obtaining food and lodging to the amount of 17s from Kate Hughes, 10 Stanley Street West, by means of false pretences. Prosecutrix said that on Sept. 23rd represented to her that he had signed a contract with the manager of the Borough Theatre for two months, and on that representation he was taken in as a lodger at 17s a week. He remained for nine days leaving on Oct. 1st. Inquiries were made at the theatre and it was found that his story was untrue. Mr Horace Lee, theatre manager, said the accused had not been employed at the borough in any capacity. PC Brown said that he arrested the accused at South Shields in a public house where he had been employed as a barman since Thursday last. The accused said that he knew he told a lie, but he intended to pay when he obtained employment. The magistrates committed him to prison for seven days in the second division". These images are a selection from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 in the collection of Tyne & Wear Archives (TWA ref DX1388/1). This interactive learning object is aimed at students of Art, Design or Media wishing to study lighting effects. As well as those interested in theatre lighting effects, this resource would also be of use to students using light in photography and installation art. Using text, illustrations and animations, the resource explores the range of different effects that can be achieved by using theatre lights, the working of a theatre lighting studio, and the health and safety considerations when using theatre lighting. An accompanying assessment tests and consolidates what students have learned, and various additional tools are provided to enhance their experience of the resource, including a magnifying glass, notepad, calculator and colour changer.Subjects

Description
2.51 is a 12-unit subject, serving as the Mechanical Engineering Department's advanced undergraduate course in heat and mass transfer. The prerequisites for this course are the undergraduate courses in thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, specifically Thermal Fluids Engineering I and Thermal Fluids Engineering II or their equivalents. This course covers problems of heat and mass transfer in greater depth and complexity than is done in those courses and incorporates many subjects that are not included or are treated lightly in those courses; analysis is given greater emphasis than the use of correlations. Course 2.51 is directed at undergraduates having a strong interest in thermal science and graduate students who have not previously studied heat transfer.Subjects
