Modelling pollution in the Great Lakes: a review

Description

This is the fifth and final unit in the MSXR209 series on mathematical modelling. In this unit we revisit the model developed in the first unit of this series on pollution in the Great Lakes of North America. Here we evaluate and revise the original model by comparing its predictions against data from the lakes before finally reflecting on the techniques used. This unit assumes you have studied Modelling pollution in the Great Lakes (MSXR209_1), Analysing skid marks (MSXR209_2), Developing modelling skills (MSXR209_3) and Modelling heat transfer (MSXR209_4).

Restoring a tooth (CAD-CAM Ceramic) - Part 2

Description

This video shows next stage of the production of a ceramic crown to restore a damaged tooth. In this video, the core of the tooth restoration (made from alumina) is milled using a CAD-CAM process. The porous structure is infiltrated under heat and pressure with a glass to give a strong substructure.

Restoring a tooth (Gold Crown) - Part 2

Description

This video shows the second stage of the production of a cast gold crown for a damaged tooth. The wax template of the tooth is sprued using wax wire, then invested in a refractory investment material. The video shows the mould being heated to both expand it and prevent against thermal shock. A centrifugal casting process is shown, using an electrical furnace for melting the gold. From set of videos used in Advanced Restorative Course in School of Clinical Dentistry, The University of Sheffield.

Energy resources: Geothermal energy

Description

Energy from sources other than fossil and nuclear fuels is to a large extent free of the concerns about environmental effects and renewability that characterise those two sources. Each alternative source supplies energy continually, whether or not we use it. This unit considers one of these alternative sources, geothermal energy derived from the interior heat of the Earth, and the potential for this alternative to supplant fossil and nuclear fuel use to power social needs fast enough to avoid the likelihood of future global warming and other kinds of pollution. TALAT Lecture 2101.01: Understanding aluminium as a material

Description

This lecture is an introduction to aluminium alloys, fabrication methods and properties. It provides information about the classification of aluminium alloys, new alloys and composites; shaping processes, processing chains and component shapes; microstructure and the interaction between microstructure and properties. It promotes understanding of the fact that the correct choice of materials demands knowledge of alloys, shaping processes and microstructure and the interaction among them. The lecture is recommended for those situations, where a brief, general background information about aluminium is needed as an introduction of other subject areas of aluminium application technologies. This lecture is part of the self-contained course "Aluminium in Product Development", which is treated u

Description

This lecture provides the teacher and students with a basis to develop sound and appropriate glass and aluminium roof designs; it explains the principles behind good design. After working through the course, the students will be in a position to design a glass roof which meets the requirements of local building regulations, and which is suited to the national traditions of the destination markets. This includes the collection of data on the local climate, because the product needs to withstand the climatic conditions in the different regions of the market. Safety and functionality are also important parameters of the finished product. Basic design engineering background, basic knowledge of corrosion effects, and some familiarity with TALAT lecture series 2100, 2200 and 5104 is assumed.

TALAT Lecture 3210: Continuous Casting

Description

This lecture gives an overview about the possibilities to produce aluminium foilstock and wire-bar in a continuous way. Continuous casting is the preferred casting method in modern plants because it offers higher productivity. But there are limitations in the use of this technology because not all alloys can be cast. The product shows properties that can differ from conventional material. This lecture demonstrates the principal of operation; technologies for continuous casting; types of casters; areas of application; properties of the products; behaviour of the products in further processing.
