Percy John Proctor, draper's assistant, arrested for false pretences

Description

Name: Percy J. Proctor Arrested for: not given Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 2 March 1906 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-85-Percy J Proctor The Shields Daily News for 2 March 1906 reports: "A FRAUDULENT LODGER AT NORTH SHIELDS At North Shields Police Court today, Percy John Proctor (16), draper's assistant, Castle Terrace, Richmond, was charged on a warrant with having, between the 24th and 26th Feb., obtained by means of false pretences, from Cecilia Miller, food of the value of 5s, with intent to defraud. The prosecutrix, who resides at 18 Addison Street, said that between one and two o'clock on the 25th ult. the prisoner and another young man came to her house and asked to be taken in as lodgers. Accused said he was a printer and his companion represented himself as an engineman employed at Mr Moore's in Tyne Street. They arranged to pay her 14s a week and she took them in. On Monday morning they went out to commence work and returned at noon. The following morning breakfast was prepared for them and she went to call them, and found that the accused's companion had disappeared whereupon she informed the police. Arthur Smith, foreman with Mr Moore, said the accused had never been in the employment of Mr Moore. Detective Radcliffe said that on the 27th ult. he arrested the prisoner at a house in West Percy Street and charged him with the offence. He made no reply. Formally charged, the accused pleaded guilty and had nothing to say. The father of the accused, a respectable looking man, said his son left home a fortnight ago and he traced him to North Shields, where he saw him in the company of another boy. He tried to persuade him to go home but with no avail. Col. Kidd (magistrates' clerk): What do you propose should be done with him. The Father: I am willing that he should go to sea or join the army, but he declines to go home so I cannot say what should be done in the meantime. The Chairman asked the accused if he would go home and he replied in the negative. He was committed to prison for a month in the second division. The Chairman remarked that this mean form of cheating had become too common in the town and the defendant had made his case worse by showing no signs of repentance and being so stubborn. In Gaol he would be able to reflect upon his position". These images are a selection from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 in the collection of Tyne & Wear Archives (TWA ref DX1388/1). This set contains mugshots of boys and girls under the age of 21. This reflects the fact that until 1970 that was the legal age of majority in the UK. Engine room of 'St Essylt'

Description

Engine room on board the cargo ship ?St. Essylt', 1948 (TWAM ref. DS.JLT/4/PH/1/653/9/1). She was launched at the North Sands shipyard of J.L. Thompson & Sons, 15 September 1947. For a view of the launch see www.flickr.com/photos/twm_news/16433838515/. This vessel was fitted with a Doxford Engine. This set celebrates the achievements of the famous Sunderland shipbuilding firm Joseph L. Thompson & Sons. The company?s origins date back to 1846 when the firm was known as Robert Thompson & Sons. Robert Thompson senior died in 1860, leaving his second son Joseph Lowes Thompson in control. In 1870 the shipyard completed its last wooden vessel and was then adapted for iron shipbuilding. By 1880 the firm had expanded its operations over much of North Sands and in 1884 completed the construction of Manor Quay, which served as fitting out and repair facilities. For many years in the late nineteenth century the yard was the most productive in Sunderland and in 1894 had the fourth largest output of any shipyard in the world. The Depression affected the firm severely in the early 1930s and no vessels were launched from 1931 to 1934. However, during those years the company developed a hull design giving greater efficiency and economy in service. During the Second World War the prototype developed by Joseph L. Thompson & Sons proved so popular that it was used by the US Government as the basis of over 2,700 Liberty ships built at American shipyards between 1942 and 1945. After the War the North Sands shipyard went on to build many fine cargo ships, oil tankers and bulk carriers. Sadly the shipyard closed in 1979, although it briefly reopened in 1986 to construct the crane barge ITM Challenger. Jerome Guerrini

Description

Name: Jerome Guerrini Arrested for: Murder Arrested at: North Shields Police Station Arrested on: 22 July 1904 Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-53-Jerome Guerrini The Morpeth Herald for 26 November 1904 reported that: "At the Assizes on Saturday, before Mr Justice Darling, Jerome Guerrini, alias Joseph Brunetti (27), fireman and a French subject, was charged with the wilful murder of Patrick Gillighan on July 4th in the Borough of Tynemouth ... Mr Hans Hamilton, in opening the case for the prosecution, said prisoner for the last four years has been a seafaring man. He was a Frenchman by birth, having been born in Corsica, although his name appeared more like an Italian one. Patrick Gillighan was a labourer and resided in Clive Street, North Shields. It appeared that on July 2nd prisoner came with a ship into the Tyne and took up his lodgings at 82 Clive Street. The deceased man lived almost directly opposite, with two brothers of the name of Davis. About 11 o'clock of the night of July 4th a noise was heard at the back of No. 10 Clive Street. One of the brothers Davis went out and saw the deceased, the prisoner and a friend of the latter named Petro Arteche. He heard the deceased man tell the prisoner and his companion to shift, as it was no place for them to commit a nuisance. Davis would tell then that he saw the prisoner strike the deceased in the chest. Davis told the deceased to come into the house which he did. Gillighan sat down to supper and just at that moment a noise was heard at the shop door in the front street. Wm Davis opened the door, but saw no one. The deceased also appeared to have come to the door, spoken to someone in the street, and proceeded immediately down an adjoining passage. While he was going down a noise was heard at the back door. Davis followed him down the passage and saw him with head of prisoner's friend, Arteche under his right arm, and was striking him. The deceased also struck at the prisoner on the right side of the head, causing it to bleed. Then it appeared that the prisoner retired a few yards, rushed at the deceased and struck him on the left side. Davis saw no knife but a few seconds afterwards he was attacked by prisoner. Davis avoided a blow and when the prisoner raised his hand he saw he had a knife. Deceased staggered forward and fell. Davis went to help him up the passage and while he was going Gillighan said 'Willie, I am stabbed'." Gillighan died shortly afterwards of internal bleeding. During the trial Guerrini's solicitor, Mr Mitchell-Innes asked the jury to find a verdict of manslaughter, emphasising that he was not the aggressor and only used his knife in the heat of the moment. He pointed to Gillinghan's conviction four years earlier for a serious assault on another man with a bottle and a knife. Caroline Evans, a married woman living in Clive Street, also testified that she saw Gillighan "seize the prisoner and drag him across the back lane". She heard the prisoner say "I am not making a noise, I don't want to fight". The Morpeth Herald reports that "Judge Darling, in his summing up, said that if there was anything that distinguished a Corsican from the native of any other country, it was the hotness of his blood and the constant use of the knife. He thought the jury should observe this fact in the case. The jury found prisoner guilty of manslaughter and he was sentenced to fifteen years penal servitude". These images are a selection from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 in the collection of Tyne & Wear Archives (TWA ref DX1388/1). Top of Grey Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, 1961

Description

View of Grey Street, looking up towards Grey's Monument, May 1961 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/26647B). Tyne & Wear Archives presents a series of images taken by the Newcastle-based photographers Turners Ltd. The firm had an excellent reputation and was regularly commissioned by local businesses to take photographs of their products and their premises. Turners also sometimes took aerial and street views on their own account and many of those images have survived, giving us a fascinating glimpse of life in the North East of England in the second half of the Twentieth Century. Ediswan

Description

This poster is from the Swan Collection of Tyne & Wear Museums, held at the Discovery Museum in Newcastle upon Tyne. Sir Joseph Wilson Swan was a British Physicist, Chemist and Inventor. Swan lived at Underhill, on Kells Lane North in Low Fell, Gateshead. It was here that he conducted most of his experiments in the large conservatory. His investigations in electro-chemistry led to the construction of a motor electric meter, an electric fire-damp detector, a miners' electric safety lamp. Most importantly, Swan was also a pioneer in photographic procedures such as carbon printing. It was Swan's demonstration of the light bulb at a lecture in Newcastle upon Tyne on 18 December 1878, before its later development by the American Thomas Edison that he is most famous for. Swan and Edison later collaborated in their work with the incandescent light bulb in 1883, when they founded the Edison & Swan United Electric Light Company, otherwise known as 'Ediswan.' Many items held at Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums relating to Joseph Swan offer an amazing insight in to his work as an inventor and his place in the History of Scientific progression. This set offers a small selection from these collections. This set has been produced in support of the British Science Festival 2013, held in Newcastle upon Tyne. An Alternative Model in the 1940's

Description

This photograph captures an Alternative Model in Newcastle, taken on the 22nd of January 1949. The collection is undeniably ahead of its time, the photographs are of an unusually dark and suggestive nature. Nothing is known of their purpose or the model in the photographs; they are simply referred to as ?Mr Steinberg?s Model.? The collection raises strong questions of an unknown Newcastle. Their dark and seductive content is suggestive of an underground and alternative scene with tones of theatrics and burlesque. This is a collection of photographs found in the Turners Collection at Tyne & Wear Archives. Turners Photography Ltd was a commercial photographic company based at 7-15 Pink Lane, Newcastle.
